YAMAHA receiver won't recognise the DTS signal

Split from this thread.

I just bought a surface pro 3.  I have a belkin mini display port to hdmi cable.  When i play a DTS video via VLC player on the surface pro 3, my yamaha receiver does not recognise the DTS signal.  I have also an ASUS gaming laptop, G750J.  When I connect the same Belkin mini display port cable to the ASUS laptop and play the same DTS video file through VLC, my yamaha receiver registers the DTS signal, so I have narrowed the problem down to the surface pro 3.  No idea how to fix this though.. both computers running the same version of windows 8.1..

    Hi Cheong,

Thank you for your response and answers to my questions.

May I have you try the following?

    Step 1: Open Control Panel

    Step 2: Tap Sound

Step 3: Select your desired playback device

    Step 4: Tap Configure

Step 5: Select an audio channel and hit Test to see if your configuration is correct

Please let me know if you have already tried the steps and the receiver still does not recognize the DTS signal.

    Hi there,

Tried the above-mentioined steps, but unfortunately, the option of sound through the mini display port is not available.  Am I missing a driver here?

Like Weng, I would also like to port out the DTS signal through the mini display port.  I hooked up a  mini display port to hdmi adapter, which is connected also to a YAMAHA receiver.

Thanks, and hope to hear from you.

    Hi Shiho,

thank you for your response.  Can I respectfully ask if this is a human responding or an automated script from a computer?  I appreciate that you are helping me to troubleshoot my system, but I have already answered a few of the questions you are asking in my previous post, making your questions seem like a pre-prepared automated script rather than a human response.  But here are my answers anyway:

    1. Yes my device is fully up to date.  Even though I have automatic updates turned on, I frequently "check for updates" to ensure that all updates are properly installed.
    2. No, I have not been able to get my Yamaha receiver to recognise the DTS signal since I pruchased the Surface Pro 3, but I have been able to get my Yamaha receiver to recognise the DTS signal using my Asus G750J gaming laptop using the same cable, running Windows 8.1.
    3. There is no retail store in Perth, Australia, where I live.  Additionally, JB-HiFi, and other large retail stores in Perth where I bought the surface pro 3 does not sell Microsoft mini displayport to hdmi cable (I would appreciate it if you can tell me where I can find a store that sells Microsoft mini displayport to hdmi cables)
    4. No, I have not checked the Windows Compatibility Site to see if the cable is compatible with Windows 8.1, but I have tried this cable with another laptop mentioned above, and it is compatible with Windows 8.1 because it does work with this other laptop (Asus G750J), and it does manage to send the DTS signal using this laptop.
    5. I have not reached out to the manufacturer of this cable, because this cable works with my Asus laptop running windows 8.1, so I have narrowed the problem to the surface pro 3, not the cable.

    Thanks for your reply Shiho,

    Cheong

    Hi Weng Cheong Wong,

Thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the Belkin Mini Display Port to HDMI cable.

    • Is your device completely up to date? Having auto update enabled doesn't necessarily mean that your device is up to date. I would recommend manually checking for any pending updates by going into Control Panel>Update history>Check for updates. Make sure that the Cover is attached while getting the update if you have one.
    • Have you ever been able to get the Yamaha receiver to recognize the DTS signal since you purchased the Surface Pro 3?
    • Just for testing purposes, I would highly recommend using a different cable to see if it works on the Surface (a Microsoft retail store would be a great place for that).
    • Have you checked the Windows Compatibility Site to see if the cable is compatible with Windows 8.1?
    • And lastly, have you reached out to the manufacturer of the cable for further assistance?

    Please let me know.
