No Touch Cover device in Device Manager

I've been having issues keeping my Touch Cover device functional. The keys/mouse pad stop working, and the only solution seems to be a full reset.

I just swapped out the Touch Cover with a new one from the Microsoft Store and I'm seeing the same issue. In the Device Manager, the only entry I see in the Keyboard group is for the HID keyboard, there's no device/driver for the Touch Cover. I've tried unattaching/reattaching the keyboard, cleaning the contacts, uninstalling the HID device, and multiple factory resets. No good.

Any suggestions?

Since you cannot find the Surface Type Cover under Device Manager, we suggest that you follow the steps below:

    1. Go to Device Manager.
    2. Under Other devices, you will find two unknown devices.
    3. Double tap one, click on driver tab, click on Update driver.
    4. Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
    5. Click on Let me pick from a list of device drivers.
    6. Select Keyboard, then click Next
    7. Select HID Keyboard device and click Finish.
    8. Repeat for the second unknown device.

Reply to us with the status of your issue. We'll be happy to assist you.

    Regards.

OK, for now I have a solution, although I've thought so in the past. Here's what I did assuming you are at the point where the keyboard is showing as an "Unknown Device"

    1. In Device Manager, right-mouse click on the "Other devices/Unknown Device" and click "Update Driver Software"
    2. Select "Browse my computer. . ."
    3. Select "Let me pick from a list of devices. . ."
    4. Make sure "Show compatible devices" is unchecked and then pick Microsoft -> Surface Touch Cover Filter Device"
    5. The driver fails to load with "Code 10", however the device now shows up in Device Manager as a Surface Touch Cover Filter Device, even though it's not working.
    6. Right-click the Surface Touch Cover Filter Device entry, and select "Uninstall"
    7. In the following message box, check the box "Delete the driver software for this device"
    8. Swipe left and hit the Settings charm -> Change PC Settings
    9. Select Update & Recovery
    10. Click on the Check Now button. This will tell you it is about to install >800MBytes of drivers (it's trying to replace the driver you just deleted)
    11. After 10 minutes, the keyboard driver should be installed normally.

    Dear All,

i still did not find solution to me type cover, its not working, tried soft reset, master reset, reinstalling windows and all updates. device manger doesn't show any type cover even in unknown devices. i have taken to Microsoft store they couldn't figure out even.

    need help.

Mine neither. There is no keyboard under"other device", nor there is the sueface cover under the keyboard.. this happened only after I did the free upgrade to Windows 10, but everything was working perfectly before the upgrade. I called Microsoft and they said I have a hardware problem (???!!!) and I need to pay like$600 USD to exchange for a new surface computer. The device went wrong before and was exchanged one time already when it was still under 1 year warranty. Be prepared to pay many $600's if you have a surface. For me, no more Microsoft product again and I asked many friends to think more than twice if they are trying to get a surface.
