Surface Pro LTE GPS configuration

I have the new Surface Pro with built in GPS. It works fine in Google maps etc.

I’m running a navigation program that expects to see an external GPS attached to a USB through a Comm port.

I can see that there’s a GPS USB multiplexer device, but cannot find any references on the web that would explain how this works and how to configure the service. Any ideas, please?

I think if we can route the internal GPS to broadcast NMEA data to a virtual port (e.g. COM 1), most software should be able to pick up the location stream. Are there any tools in Win 10 that can do that?

I've been trying to use the built-in GPS in my new surface pro, but withou success! None of the apps I use (mostly GIS and digital cartography) are able to access the built-in GPS (if there's is one!).

Is there a way (something like a device manager) that I can see the components of the tablet? I downloaded and run the diagnostics toolkit... nothing.

I don't want to use WiFi or data connection to find my location.

Hi. Which Surface Pro do you have? It’s only the LTE/4g version that has the GPS.

if you have the right one, you may need to change the privacy settings. There is a list of Apps that are allowed to use your precise location. My problem is that the App which I want to be able to use the GPS doesn’t show up and there isn’t an obvious way to add to the list. So, for example, There are two maps apps using location services, but Google Earth isn’t on the list. I suspect that Apps acquired through the Microsoft store get access, but other Apps don’t, but that might be too simplistic!

Thanks for your reply....the program is called Neptune and is a nautical navigation app. I am talking to the software developers too, but they are not familiar with the new Surface Pro LTE. I was hoping that the GPS USB multiplexer could be somehow configured to allow the program to “see” the Internal GPS device.

    Hi Nigel,

Can you tell us which navigation program were you trying to use on your device?

We're looking forward to your response.
