On virtually all Forums, the "Two Button Reset" using the combination of the Volume Up Button together with the Power Button is recommended to force reset Surface Devices, including the SB 2, the Surface Laptop and other newer Surface devices.

https://support.microsoft.com/help/4036280/surface-force-a-shut-down-and-restart-your-surface

The above link recommends a different method for newer Surface Devices and has recently even been updated to include Surface Go. Therefore, it seems to be up to date.

It recommends the two button procedure only for older Surface Machines.

Apart from this official recommendation, the two procedures lead to different results, the Two Button Startup ende in the UEFI menu, the recommended procedure ends in rebooting my SB 2 15".

Which procedure is to be used, for example when resetting to retrieve the "lost dGpu"?

    Hi Patrick,

You are correct, starting with Surface Studio and continuing on with Surface Laptop, the new Surface Pro, Surface Book 2 and Surface Go the way to reset the hardware is to simply hold the power button for 20 seconds until the logo appears.

On these devices, power and volume up will boot the device into UEFI, nothing more.

    Hope that helps,

    Greg

Really makes one wonder about the information coming out of Microsoft.

When I recently lost my GPU along with a tablet detach failure on my Surface Book 2 it was the two button reset that fixed both problems.

Thank you for your answer. The odd thing is, that many people trying to reconnect their "lost dGpu's" are reporting success with the old two button procedure. Placebo effect?

When I asked about this after the two processes were published, I was told that

using the older 2 button process on the newer devices really didn't do anything

    except reboot the device.
