SurfaceBook 2 USB C to DisplayPort (without SurfaceDock)

Hi.

I have a Surface Book 2 15 inch. I have dual monitors. One is a QHD 144hz DisplayPort connection (Dell S2716DG Gsync that doesn't allow daisy chain) and one a 1080 60hz HDMI connection.

I have been using the SurfaceDock to connect both of these monitors. And it sorta works. I have two problems with it that makes me need to get rid of it:

  1. The SurfaceDock randomly disconnects and reconnects things connected to it (and yes, I've updated the firmware, and it still sucks).
  2. The SurfaceDock is really under powered for the SB 2, even more so than the adapter that comes with the SB 2. Battery drain when gaming is real. I don't care about 20% battery loss, but I do care about cycling the battery on my $3k laptop every time I load a demanding application. Battery replacement is suspect, so I don't want to burn it out faster than need be.

So, I'm trying to ditch the SurfaceDock via viking funeral and find a USB C option to connect the monitors, mouse/keyboard, and use the 102w power adapter that came with the Surface Book.

Has anyone found a USB C dongle / hub that can: 1. Run a display port at QHD @ 144hz 2. Run an HDMI at 60 hz (or whatever)? Does anyone know if the SB 2 can even run DisplayPort alt over USB C?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

    Hi,

I spent a couple hours on the phone with Microsoft support for a similar problem. Their phone support people are great by the way. I have a Surface Book 2 15" 1TB. I was trying to run a 1080P plasma TV and a 4K 60 hz LG monitor. You would think that with the Nvidia processor that should be fine. You would be wrong. Bottom line, Microsoft finally admitted that the Surface would always default to the Intel display adapter and that can't be changed. The best solution I found was to use two Surface mini display to hdmi (active) adapters. That allows me to have both connected with the 4K limited to 30 hz at 4K. I'm not gaming so it's not too bad. If I really need 60 hz I can unplug the TV. You have to use two active adapters. If you try to use a display port cable it won't work. I hope they will address the display adapter issue but it seems unlikely. Even playing a visual novel with 3D selecting the Nvidia processor will drain the battery and show zero charging. Hope this is some help.

    Best,

    Martin
