the easiest workaround I can think of:

install the UK keyboard layout but keep using the US layout as default.

whenever you want to use the uk stuff, just tap WINKEY+SPACE and it switches languages.

Then press shift+3 to get the pound symbol and hit winkey+space to go back to US keyboard.

    A possible solution:

get the Microsoft keyboard layout creator tool and remap a key combination to write the £ symbol.

    Thanks Reagan

I did find James's reply helpful but I was hoping there was a quick keystroke combination directly from the US-English snapfit keyboard on the Surface 2. (not Pro). Is there?

    Thanks

    David

To do that, you may have to use the "Character Map" located under Windows Accessories under "All Apps".

Normally, on a regular computer keyboard that has a numeric keypad, if you knew the ASCII code for that character, you press and hold down the ALT key and using the numeric keypad, punch in that 3 digit code and then release the ALT key.  It only works with the numeric keypad and not the numbers on the top row.  HOWEVER, you can try the number keys anyhow.

The cent sign was always my favorite and it is ALT 155.  I am on an iPad right now and don't have that function to use as a sample but the Character Map displays the ASCII code on the lower right corner of the panel when you find and select the character you want.  From there, you can right down on a notepad your most used characters and over time, you will remember them.
