On the Surface PRO 3, does the pen work with any program?

A basic question: does the pen act as an overlay on ANY software, thereby permitting markups on, say, an Internet Explorer Web page. Or, does it require specific software like OneNote and Adobe?

I'm a high school math and science teacher. I'd like to use this pen for classroom presentations (preferably projecting the image on a screen, but that part is easy). I just want to know what documents I can use this pen on, especially if I can mark on a Internet Explorer webpage

Try a program called epic pen.  Not in the store.  Works great.   I use it with the surface pro 3 and I can write on the web, desktop or any place I have open.  Also the front button on the pen acts as an eraser so I don't have to click around to get the correct feature.  I just need to click the arrow when I want to use the pen as a mouse and the pen when I want pen. And I can choose colors easier.

As  a matter of fact Microsoft should look at this app as this is how their pen should work.

You can take screen clippings from any program in put them into OneNote, but no, on programs that don't natively support ink the pen will mimic a mouse....

advice provided so far is on point. I really love OneNote. If you're not a total pig, it will transcribe hand-writing to text. 3 additional points:

    1. If you happen to have a conventional computer with the same software load as the tablet will get, PLUS any cheap digitizer tablet, you can experiment with pen input/overlay. The hardware input is recognized the same as a tablet's digitizer.
    2. There are classroom presentation packages that make presentation more robust, if not always simpler. Some can RECORD screen activity along with dialog going on in the class. I used to record such sessions and post on a class web page. Some allow picture-in-picture from another camera, so viewers can see the presentation. Good GRIEF wear a suit and be politically correct in case it ends up in court against you.  And don't do markups in red and green because of the color blind. And don't draw any shapes that resemble a cross, 6-point star, various weapon-like shapes or... well anything.  Lines with arrows are ok so long as they aren't wavy lines like spermatozoa.
    3. When you get your tablet, consider attaching the pen to a lanyard. It WILL try to get away. You will HATE buying a new one.

All of the Office Programs support ink, you can markup slide decks, etc. There are additional Apps that support ink, paint programs (ranging from Adobe Professional Grade to FreshPaint Modern UI), PDF Markup Apps (I use DrawboardPDF personally). Mind mapping Applications and many more....

    Thanks for your quick response.

A follow-up : With what programs does it work? I gather OneNote. Does it work with PowerPoint? Others? Now or future plans?
