Internet Explorer has stopped working error

On various websites my internet explorer will stop working on my Surface and I will get the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message. This only happens on certain websites like IMDB.com or when I was trying to set up an eye doctor's appointment. I have googled possible fixes and have gone into the advanced settings of the IE options on the computer, I've been in the events Viewer and command prompts. I have refreshed my computer and I finally reset my computer to factory settings in hopes that this would fix the error. No such luck. I'm wondering if anyone has any sort of solution for this. I feel like I've tried just about everything. Thanks.

    TinaReiter,

Thanks for the info, the model and OS is valuable information. There are not many other browsers for the RT however if you check the store you can find them. I have used the UC browser, which is free in the Microsoft store and like others compatible with RT.

First, I would check the date, time and region on your device. If the date or time is not correct, it can cause issue with web servers including mail servers, which can then give errors regarding security. To correct the date and/or time swipe from the right, tap settings and then change PC settings. Tap time and language. Turn off “set time automatically”.  Change the time zone if needed.  Then tap change to correct the date and/or time. You can then turn on the set time automatically.

On the left panel tap on Region and language and check or correct the region.

The next step would be to uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer. This is done in the control panel. Swipe right and tap search. Type in control panel and tap on it. Click on uninstall a program. When programs and features come up tap on Turn Windows features on or off, on the left panel.  This may take a moment to open the Windows features box. Find Internet Explorer in the list and remove the check next to it. You should receive a message or warning please click yes to continue. Click ok on the Windows features box. Another windows will pop up and ask to restart please do. This will uninstall Internet Explorer. To reinstall it follow the same steps however, you will be putting a check next to Internet Explorer in the Windows features box.

At this point, I would think you could get online. If not I would suggest either a refresh or reset.  Instructions are located here.  A couple things to note only have the Microsoft keyboard and power connected and although a refresh saves our data, it also saves a backup copy of Windows that can be 7-8 GB in size. This can be a problem with smaller drives. If you have a 32 GB drive, you may want to back up your data and run a reset.

Hello. My surface does not allow me to download other browsers for the internet. I have tried going into the advanced settings and resetting the Internet Explorer, but that has not worked. I have checked the Windows Defender as well and it says everything is up to date. I was hoping to avoid taking this into a computer expert as it probably won't be worth the money spent on it. This Surface runs on the Windows RT 8.1 and I am not computer techy, but have tried searching up different solutions. I just tried logging into my Microsoft email and the Internet Explorer message popped up. When it tried restarting it would automatically freeze until it brought up a message that stated the site may  not be secure. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Tina,

You posted your question in Surface Laptop so we all thought you had the Surface Laptop. Since you have a RT, then no, you cannot download another browser.

Have you tried both the modern version of IE and the desktop version of IE?

If you are in the US, you can go to a physical retail Microsoft Store and they may be able to help diagnose.

Sorry to hear your Internet Explorer has stopped working. As Barb suggested using another browser might be a work around. I would suggest Edge the new browser in Windows 10, it is designed to deliver a better web experience. It’s fast, compatible, and built for the modern web.

To use Internet explorer (IE) I would suggest resetting it. To do this have IE closed and in Cortana search for internet options. Open internet options and click the Advance tab and then reset near the bottom. Note this will clear any saved passwords so your will be asked to re-enter them.

One thing that may assist if there happens to be a missing update or something was not fully installed, or has become corrupt during installation, can be resolved by running our Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. This tool can take approximately 10-20 minutes to run, and will scan all of your Windows Updates and installed Apps to ensure they are installed and allocated correctly.
