Surface Book - Clicking/popping sound when pressing on the bottom of the keyboard.

So I just got my surface book today and I am really happy with it so far! However, I noticed when I picked up the device that it makes a loud popping noise when pressing lightly on the left middle of the keyboard. (Bottom side).

It's like something sticking and then popping out, like a Snapple lid.

Is this normal? Anyone else notice this issue?

I can't speak to the popping noise, and it sounds like some of that has been ironed out, but I was asked by @SurfaceSupport (on Twitter) to share my experiences in this thread, so here we go:

I have the Surface Book i7/512GB model, and received it on October 26th, after pre-ordering online on the day-of the announcement.  Ever since I received it, I have been experiencing a very odd and frustrating buzzing noise coming through the headphones, only when I have headphones plugged in, and audio is playing (or just completed playing).  The buzzing happens even if have the device on mute (with audio playing, while muted).  When I touch the screen, the buzzing changes frequency.  I just spent several hours on the phone with Microsoft Support, and I'll be running some experiments and talking again with them tomorrow, but I'm at a loss here.

    • I've tried two different sets of headphones and two stereo systems, and have determined that it is not the headphones at fault.
    • I have tried all the headphones on multiple other Microsoft, Toshiba, Apple, Dell, Nokia, and Samsung devices here (I'm a software engineer, so lots of testing on other devices), and I don't have this issue on any of the other devices.
    • I got a replacement Surface Book of the same model from a local Microsoft Store, came home today with it, unpacked it, updated all its software/firmware, and it is still buzzing.
    • I've tried it with the power connector attached and detached, I've tried it with the clipboard attached and detached, and I've tried it with wi-fi turned off, all to no avail.  The buzzing is still there.

So, those are my experiences.  It seems like I'm getting interference from somewhere, but only with the Surface Book.  Somehow, I must be acting like an antenna when I touch the screen, because it changes the buzzing.  I hooked my Surface Book up to another computer and recorded the buzzing, and I also hooked the Surface Book up to a stereo system and captured video of me touching the screen and how it changed the frequency of the buzzing coming through the headphone jack.

I'm going to take it with me to a few different locations around here to see if there's some sort of localized interference (I did walk the perimeter  of my ~0.25 acre property and heard the buzzing the whole time), but still: why only my SB and not any of my other devices?

A few people reported this issue on Reddit, but there's little to go off of there, so I'm hitting at all the sources I can right now.  I love the Surface Book, but this buzzing is incredibly frustrating, especially when I'm trying to do any sort of audio work.

Oh, Microsoft powers that be, please hear my calls.  And seriously, if this is some local interference issue that you guys can figure out, you are more than welcome to come set up shop at my house and figure it out.  I'll even feed you and stock your beverages of choice.

Jodacola, how did you end up resolving your Surface Book audio buzzing issue? The exact same audio issue has been plaguing me - I've contacted Surface Support and done endless resets and driver installs but both the first and second replacement machines buzz as well. I'm at the end of my rope here.

Yup. It's the glue strips. Look at the iFixit teardown photos. They all do this. If it's a deal breaker, return it. Otherwise you're going to have to live with it.

Mine is doing the same that you speak of and I'm also one that's having the constant freezes... so frustrating.

I believe the ORIGINAL reported issue above is noise heard when the left side of the bottom panel under the keyboard is pressed in with your fingers. The force needed is a little more than "light" but a lot less than a damaging level. It also happens when you pick the laptop up by gripping on the left side, and if your finders are pressing in on the bottom at the same time.

I suspect the inward pressing bottom panel "sticks" to something for a fraction of a second then lets loose with an audible "pop". It's as if there was sticky tape in there. Maybe it's the bottom of the battery which must take up the whole lower surface and maybe was installed with some sort of "glue tape"???

Obviously I'm guessing the cause, but my concern is will this physical "popping" cause damage in the long run?

You are correct, I am talking about a physical "popping". It is not coming from the speakers or the system itself, just from the bottom of the keyboard. When you push on it, it pops in and out.

It really bothers me as microsoft stated that these devices would fit together flawlessly. Makes me sad that such an expensive device has this issue. I will be getting a replacement.
