Here's what I found after digging some more. For whatever reason, when I have paired headphones and turn them on and connect them, the SP3 does not automatically switch to use the headphones. Instead it still shows the built it speakers as the default device and sends SOME sound through the headphones and mutes the speakers.

If I go in and set the Stereo headphones as default, I get what I expect. But I have to manually set as default.

(My other non Surface computers auto switch to Bluetooth)

    brand new beats solo

I really had not used Bluetooth audio with my SP3 since late last year (see http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mvpawardprogram/archive/2014/12/15/on-the-road-with-my-surface-pro-3.aspx ) but after reading your post above, unpaired my Parrot Zik's from my iPhone and paired with my SP3. AWFUL is too kind a word to describe the sound.

I then unpaired from the SP3 and paired with a different Windows 8.1 device to test if this was a Windows issue or a Surface driver issue. I was back to awesome sound on my non Surface.

I've sent your information and my own in to an internal contact at Microsoft. Sadly, it's been taking them 6 months or longer to fix things. I can only say thanks for finding this.

    More random thoughts.

    If you go into

Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers

Look for the device that sounds bad. If the icon looks like a Bluetooth microphone/earpiece then it's using the telephone device profile, Now that I think of it I had a similar problem with a Motorola headphones with a built-in microphone. Sometimes it was recognized as stereo speakers and sometimes it was recognized as a Bluetooth headset. The latter sounded terrible. That was some time ago and I haven't tried them with the Surface Pro 3.

There are several models of Beats Wireless headphones. Which do you have? Their quality is so-so IMO.
