Just to clarify, the SSD is soldered to a card, if you did take the pro apart (ugh! glue!) you could not just pop in a SATA 6 drive, you'd have to get an SSD that is mounted to the same type of card which might limit your choice (I haven't checked out the availability of these, but I gather they are used in some other laptops too). Might be fun to try in the furture when you've bought a Surface 2, 3 or 4 and no longer use the orginal as more than a picture frame, but probably not worth the hassel even then. My hope was that it wouldn't be too bad to take apart so I could replace the fans and battery in a few years, but I hate having to unglue things and reglue them, major pita, but that's the way it is...guess they didn't want to take chances on anything rattling :).
Is it possible to replace the 64gb or 128gb SSD hard drive or increase ram?
I would love to make the Surface Pro my new laptop/computer replacement, but I really need a bit more hard drive space than what is available - is it possible for me to replace the hard drive that comes with the Surface Pro with my own separately purchased SSD hard drive (such as a Kingston 480gb SSD).
- Would swapping out the drive void the hardware warranty for the entire unit for all parts, or just for the hard drive?
- Would I be able to get or create a Windows 8 Surface Pro recovery disk to install on my newly installed drive?
- Is the unit itself constructed in such a way that a standard SSD doesn't work, and/or do you need extra special equipment to open the unit, such as unusual tools and replacement one-time-use screws or something weird?
Any info would be much appreciated!

2013-06-27T19:46:49+00:00 There is nothing that can be added within the tablet such as RAM, larger SSD card or even an upgrade to the processor. That is the same with all tablets because of the way they are built.
If you want to take a look at the motherboard, go to http://www.ifixit.com and you will see what I mean.
A laptop is a different story. You can add/upgrade memory modules and the hard disk can be replaced either with a SSD card or a larger capacity hard disk. Now, that would be with a laptop and not a tablet class machine.
All tablets are designed to be simple, basic machines that do a secondary job compared to a desktop or even a laptop. They are easier to carry around and you can transfer the data to your primary computer.
The Pro model is actually good as it is with the current specifications. You can add more storage via the micro-SD card slot but limited to a maximum of 64GB cards. You can always carry around a handful of micro-SD cards and in theory have unlimited storage. You can also attach external hard disks and also external DVD burner drives as well.
Before investing any money in any machine, do what you are doing now and ask questions and do some research. Others have not and bought the RT model which is limited to only what is available in the Store and cannot install regular software. The Pro can.
You will also find that there are very few if any tablets out there with the real Windows 8 that has a built in digitizer and comes with a pen. Also when you are shopping around, compare the price tag of the Surface Pro compared to the other tablets. Some of the other tablets have the ATOM processor and not the Intel Core i5. You can buy a Surface Pro and a RT for the price of one of those tablets.
Research, research, and more research. That is what you are doing now and continue doing that. You can visit the Microsoft Store which has quite a few of the other tablets and you can compare there or you can find some in brick & mortar stores out in town that might have them as well.
Shocking it may be, a tablet is not designed for upgrades. They are for simple, basic use. All the components are welded together and you can't replace them. That is why when these tablets break and sent in for repair, they are replaced instead.

That's a great question. Unfortunately, the Surface Pro cannot be upgraded.

2012-12-04T07:27:54+00:00 I doubt you'll find an answer to this one until after the Surface Pro is released. Your earliest answer will probably come from ifixit; that site did a teardown of the Surface RT, describing exactly what tools you'd need to take it apart, and showing photos of what lies inside.

2013-02-13T15:24:08+00:00 Per iFixit's teardown, the RAM/memory cannot be replaced as it is soldered to the system board. The SSD can be replaced if you are enterprising and want to pry off the screen and get to it. I do not recommend this unless you have a heat gun and a lot of patience.
