Surface Pro 4 Power Adapter - USB charging port

Is the Surface Pro 4 Power Adapter supposed to be able to charge both the SP4 plus a device plugged into the adapter by USB?  I attached the power cord to the SP4, then attached my Lumia phone into the power adapter USB charge port.  When I do this, I notice that the charging light on the power adapter plug (connected to the SP4) turns on and off.  I also note that the charging status on the SP4 continually changes from "charging" to "not charging".  This only happens when I plug my phone into the power adapter.  In other words, if I don't have my phone plugged into the USB charging port on the power adapter, the device charges appropriately.

Here are my questions:

  1. Is this supposed to happen?
  2. What is the USB charging port on the power adapter supposed to be for?
  3. What are the limits of the USB charging port on the power adapter?

    Hello Heinz57Sriracha,

The USB port on the charger should charge any USB device you have.

Have you tried different outlets to see that isn't the case?

Some USB devices can demand more power than the charger can provide while connected to the Surface Pro 4 and as such will stop charging the Surface Pro 4 as a result.

The charger itself might be faulty and if this is the case, then I would suggest contacting Surface Support for a charger replacement.

    Best Regards

I've had this happen on multiple chargers... three in a row, plus my current one.  Haven't had one provide enough power to charge a phone yet.

I am having the same issues with an LG V10 plugged into the USB charging port on the brick.

Screen keeps flickering and the charging indicator keeps going on/off.

My dad just got a Surface Pro 4 and charges it from the supplied charger at the same time as charging his Kindle Paperwhite. He has experienced no problems in doing this. He has also plugged in my mum's iPad at the same time as the Surface Pro 4 and the Kindle (the USB plug has several outlets) and all 3 devices charge concurrently without problems.

    Hope this helps.

If there is a Microsoft store near you have them replace it or contact Microsoft support and have them send you a new charger.
