Microsoft Office on Surface Pro 3

While researching which Tablet to buy for college, I found the Surface 2 Pro which already has Microsoft Office Installed (A big Plus for me). However when I went to Best Buy to purchase the Surface 2 Pro, I was talked into pre-ordering the new Surface Pro 3 with Intel i3 because it was BETTER and NEWER (I fell for the guys speal). So I pre-ordered it assuming it had Microsoft Office also pre-installed but when I went looking into it further, I found that might not be the case. Can someone tell me if I will get Microsoft Office installed on it already or if I will have to purchase it? I really don't want to spend a addition $100-200 for Microsoft Office. Thank you.

To add to what James said...

If you're a university student, you can get Office 365 University for $80. That includes the full latest version of Office, which you can install on two devices (PC or Mac or tablet). It also includes 1 TB of OneDrive cloud storage. The subscription is good for four years and is by far the best deal available.

The Surface Pro models (Pro, Pro 2, and Pro 3) did not come with Microsoft Office.  Only the RT tablets (Surface RT and Surface 2).  A 60 day trial was installed on most if not all.

The RT tablets cannot install regular Windows software and only apps from the Store, so, Microsoft created a recompiled version to be included for free with the RT tablets which is the Office Home & Student plus Outlook.  That version of Office will not install in a regular computer.

Granted, the machine is not a Surface tablet but you can check on the Asus Transformer series tablets.  Both are x86 based and run regular Windows 8 and include a free copy of Microsoft Office Home & Student (no Outlook).  The screen on those tablets are a half inch smaller than the Surface tablets which might or might not be an issue.  Microsoft sells them in their online store under the category "2 in 1".

As far as I know, those are the only Intel based tablets that would come with Microsoft Office.

With that said, at the college you will be going to, as a student you can get Microsoft Office at a super discount.  Check with the school on that.  If you get a Surface Pro model tablet and it comes with the trial version, it can be activated with the educator Product Key for single machine use.  Just make sure the school has the keys for Office 2013 and not Office 2010 like most of them do.
