Surface Pro 4 not detecting Samsung Smart TV as a wireless display

Hello Community,

I am convinced I've read every post of every forum and watched every relevant video on this issue, but I am at a loss....

Acer Aspire F5-571 - OLD LAPTOP

Surface Pro 4 Windows 10 i5 - NEW LAPTOP

Samsung UE50JU6800K Smart TV - FIRST TV

Sony Bravia KDL-40WE663 Smart TV - SECOND TV

June '16 - around Feb '17: I was able to use screen mirroring through my Acer laptop onto my Samsung TV perfectly. Around Feb '17, my Samsung TV became no longer detectable through the "Connect" or "Project" quick options on my Acer.

June '17 - I got my Surface Pro 4. Since then, I have never been able to mirror to my Samsung TV (same as my Acer). "Settings - Bluetooth & other devices - add Bluetooth or other device".....my TV is detectable through the "Bluetooth" option, but not the "Wireless display or dock" option. I connect with the TV via the Bluetooth option. For a short time it then appears under the "Wireless displays & docks" paired heading, before swiftly moving itself underneath "Other devices". I then try to screen mirror via "Connect" or "Project - connect to a wireless display" and the TV just does not appear as an option, despite it being detectable and connected as a Bluetooth device.

December '17 - I bought a second TV (Sony Bravia) and was able to mirror the SP4 to this TV within 2 minutes of trying, following the exact same steps as I do when trying to mirror with my Samsung.

  • I am not using a wireless display adapter
  • I know all devices in question are Miracast/Allcast compatible because I have been able to use the screen mirror functionality at some point with all of them

I have spoken with Samsung and the TV is fully up to date software-wise.

I just want to know why I am no longer able to screen mirror through my Samsung TV like I used to be able to with my Acer / why I am unable to do so with my SP4, despite it working perfectly through my Sony Bravia TV.

Thanks

    Hi Ruz San, Barb,

Thank you both for your replies.

Ruz, my SP4 is fully up to date with drivers etc. I spent a long time reading forum posts and going through Microsoft troubleshooting steps before posting here. I don't think there is a simple fix here such as updating SP4 drivers. As Barb says, I am able to successfully connect to one of 2 TV's, so SP4 drivers don't seem to be the problem.

I would appreciate any further help you can provide.

    Thanks,

    WIll

I'll be interested in what Samsung has to say. It looks like there has been some flakiness depending on firmware. https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/TV-Audio-Video/Issues-after-JU6800-TV-update-JULY/td-p/247649 is an example..

I've noted other miscellaneous Miracast issues in other threads that may or may not be an issue with Windows.

I'd recommend also using the Feedback Hub App to submit a bug report, being very specific as you've done here about Miracast working with the Sony but not the Samsung. Include the following:

Model number and firmware on Samsung

Version of video display adapter driver

Version of marvell wifi adapter driver

And if asked to try to duplicate it in the feedback hub, DO it and let them collect logs.

    Hi Barb,

    Thanks again.

I actually started by taking this issue up with Samsung (mainly because this all works fine on my Sony Bravia!). We went through a reset and comprehensive update of all the latest firmware etc. but this did not resolve the situation. In terms of forgetting all known devices on the Samsung, this would have been done through the TV reset. To be frank, I found Samsung's customer support thoroughly unhelpful.

The difference with my issue compared to the link you have sent through is that the option to connect / project through wireless display from my SP4 to my TV is that the TV is not even available to select, let alone having something go wrong with the connection attempt.

Like I say, I feel as if I've been through all of what would be the basic steps to resolve this. Unfortunately, I think the issue requires more advanced expertise than me simply reading forums and watching Youtube videos!

Your continued support is greatly appreciated. If you feel I need to go elsewhere with this then do please let me know.

    Many thanks,

    Will

Miracast is a wireless protocol. This person is successfully able to contact to

1 of 2 TV's "December '17 - I bought a second TV (Sony Bravia) and was able to

mirror the SP4 to this TV within 2 minutes of trying, following the exact same

steps as I do when trying to mirror with my Samsung. "

The only drivers involved are the video driver and the Marvel wifi driver.

For issues like what you've shared, it's best to start by installing the latest updates for the Surface itself. You can run Windows Update to do that. This link will give you more suggestions to troubleshoot the display problem.
