How to force a restart of the Surface Book.

I had my new Surface Book go into an extremely long "Please Wait" loop when switching users.  The normal hold the power button for 4 seconds did not work to shut down the computer so I could continue (thank you Microsoft - you idiot).

Searching the forum found the secret code to apparently reset or restart the computer.

1.  Hold the Power button for 30 seconds and then,

2.  continuing to hold down power, press the volume up side of the volume button for 15 seconds.

During this procedure, about 10 seconds into step 2, the screen changed, the "SURFACE" screen appeared and soon we got back to a screen that was responsive; apparently a setting screen showing system information.  Exiting this screen was successful and the computer apparently rebooted.

Luckily this did not happen at a Client office or at a Classroom presentation as it took me a different computer and an hour to track down a solution to the problem.  I have no idea what happened or if this is a "approved" procedure.

Since Presentations was why the Book was purchased and there is no documentation that this procedure is correct or that it did not otherwise damage the computer, it likely renders the Surface Book as unusable for it's intended purpose.  I certainly do not trust it for critical presentations and hopefully the company can get its money back.  It is the second time in the week since purchased the computer went into an unrecoverable, unstoppable, out of control loop of doing something other than what we needed it to do.  The first was when it decided to install updates while we were demonstrating/testing capabilities and required a hour long call (to a thankfully very competent Microsoft support person) to fix the resulting problems.

I post this to share what I learned with a "Book" heading and solicit any other solutions to an uncooperative, unresponsive Surface Book.

It would be nice to know if this is an "approved" procedure and where it might be documented.

Thank you for reaching out to the Surface community.

You can find the documentation on how to restart your Surface in our Force a shut down and restart your Surface article.

Thank you for your reply fatou8,

This is good information about Automatic Repair but was not the answer I was looking for.

Do you know if there is an officially recognized procedure to interrupt the Surface Book and or shut down/reset the Surface Book when it is in the middle of a task (and the power button or Ctl-Alt-Del does not work)?

As far as I know all desktops have a reset button, a master power control, and a plug.  For Laptops holding the power button for 4 seconds seemed to work, I suppose you can pull the battery.  There does not seem to be a similar procedure for the Surface Book other than letting the battery run down.

I understand that doing this during a Firmware update is a BAD IDEA.  I hope that was not what was going on when I executed the procedure I did.

So to restate my question, Is there an Approved procedure to Reset the Surface Book while it is working that correctly shuts down all processes and restarts with a hot boot?  If so, where is that documented?
