Surface Pro gets very hot while charging

Hello,

I have a new Surface Pro and have been using it for a few days now. However one thing I noticed is that when I am charging it, the device tends to get very hot, both the back and the screen. But once I unplug it, it quickly cools down, in usually 5 minutes. It's not very handicapping, but it has me worried as to whether the hot temperature can damage the Surface.

So I was wondering: should I should return it and get a replacement, or just keep it because it's normal for it to do that

Thanks in advance for your replies!

    Hello Stonyly,

Would you mind sharing the processor configuration you are using? The latest Surface Pro i5 models are utilizing Intel's 7th generation processors which are designed to run cooler, therefore, Microsoft removed fans from the design to provide a lighter device with extended battery life.

The i7 models can still warm up quite a bit, especially under heavy usage, and still require a fan. Do you hear the fan turn on? How do you use your device?

The magnesium body is designed to absorb heat and cool down quickly which is why you are noticing fast cool down after you have stopped using the device. Users have reported normal operating temperatures reaching up to 75 degrees Celsius.

In my experience, some users are alarmed by the Surface due to the fact they can feel the temperature vs using older plastic OEM brands with larger fans and more space between you and the processor. The heat you are feeling is most likely normal and should not harm your device, however, if you are local to a Microsoft Store you can visit for a diagnostic checkup and determine if the machine is running at above normal operating temperatures.

Please let me know if you have additional questions!

Apologies for misunderstanding. My device (Surface Pro 4) also can become warm when charging as well as the adapter. It isn't abnormal. My device is also set up to download updates when plugged in and connected to WiFi, so it still is "working" in standby sometimes.

I would not be alarmed by the heat when charging unless you notice discoloration. Similar to the processor, the battery is very close to you due to the nature of the design and it can heat up when charging.

If the device becomes too warm to handle, however, then I would advise contacting MS for a replacement.

I hope that is helpful for you.

    Hey there, thanks for replying!

My Surface Pro is using the i5 variant, and I am aware that no fan is present. It actually doesn't warm up a lot at all when I am using it, although I just browsed the web for now. What I meant is that it became very hot after some time charging it. Charging excluded, everything is great.

For instance today, I plugged it in for an hour, and when I came back, it was extremely hot but as I said, it quickly cooled down. Could there be a problem with the charger/AC Adapter or battery, or is it normal to do that? I don't have much experience with tablets or Surface products in general. It was resting on a wooden surface during that time, if that helps.

    Looking forward to your reply!

Alright, I decided I'll see in the next week whether I keep it or get a replacement. I bought the Surface Pro for uni, so I should be fine anyway.

Thank you very much for your help, and have a great day!

Don't worry about it! Apart from that, everything seems to be working perfectly. I think I am still going to ask for a replacement, just in case. I am not in a hurry and the Surface really is hard to touch when it gets warm like it does with me.

Would you happen to know if there are any downsides to asking for a replacement, waiting aside? I suppose it wouldn't, but does it void or alter my current warranty?
