My laptop is possessed. Please provide the correct answer to make this persisting issue go away. It’s been a problem for over a decade, according to my google search for a fix, but the “fixes” are all over the place. Please provide the established solution. Sorry to be rude, just a bit beyond annoyed and it’s almost Halloween, and my laptop is acting like it’s haunted by mentally unstable digital spirits.

Wow, sounds like quite the project. I will do that when I have time. Thanks for your assistance with this.

Folks who are following this thread, please note that Microsoft does not know how to fix this issue after all this time. Please consider that carefully when purchasing your next laptop.

Thanks for your suggestions, but none of these worked, either.

In fact, now the autorotate nag is coming up immediately now, almost like it's aggravated at our attempts to get rid of it.

No worries, Fix Your Bloody Bugs Microsoft. It was a great pleasure to assist you further on this. Let's further troubleshoot your device.

    • Will you confirm if the problem with the auto rotation does comes up when the keyboard is connected?
    • When this problem occurs, do you just get a notification in the bottom right corner of the screen, or does the screen rotate as well?

You may also try the following troubleshooting steps below.

Check if an accessory is causing rotation problems: Disconnect the keyboard, dock, or external display. Change the orientation of the device to see if it rotates automatically.

Dirty connectors on your keyboard can cause problems. Here's how to clean your connectors:

    1. Disconnect the power cord from your Surface Book and unplug any video adapters and USB devices such as printers, keyboards, and mice.
    2. Detach the keyboard.
    3. Wet a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol (use 95 percent isopropyl alcohol or higher if possible). Use the swab to clean the silver pins on both faces of the three connectors, located on the top middle surface of the keyboard hinge. Rub the swab back and forth vigorously, and use a fresh swab surface to clean each of the six connector faces. For more info, see Clean and care for Surface.
    4. Check that the pins are dry and that there are no cotton fibers or small objects on the connector.
    5. Reattach the screen to the keyboard.

Run the system file checker to check if there are corrupted system files that are just looping around causing this kind of issue to exist. See Using System File Checker in Windows - Microsoft Support.

Manually update the drivers and firmware for you Surface.

    1. Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Book.
    2. Then click the link next to Surface Book 2 then click Download on the next page.
    3. Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.
    4. After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

If none of these solutions work, then we may need to reset your device. This would help us evaluate whether the issue is with the software or a hardware failure. For more details, see Restore or reset Surface for Windows - Microsoft Support.

Thanks for your help, Lavenia. Unfortunately, I did everything suggested and I'm still getting the autorotate nag popping up at random times (every few minutes).

Version of Windows and build are, respectively, Windows 10 Pro version 22H2 and 19045.3570.

The auto rotation doesn't seem to pop up when the keyboard is detached, but I seldom detach it and haven't had time to monitor it over a long period of time.

    Warm Regards,

Hi Fix Your Bloody Bugs Microsoft,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I am aware that you're experiencing issues with auto rotation on your Surface device. I am here to help and let us work on this together.

Here's the steps you can try to disable it:

Check the Rotation Lock: For Surface Book Devices, the auto rotate will only work if you detach the screen. Try to detach the screen first then go to the notification area on the bottom right corner then turn off Rotation lock. Then reattach your keyboard.

This should disable the auto-rotate feature on your Surface device. If you continue to experience issues, you may also try the following steps below to further troubleshoot your device.

    1. Force a restart: Select Start > Power > Shut down and wait a moment for your Surface to shut down. Then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. If you see the logo screen appear after a few seconds, continue to hold for the full 20 seconds until you see the logo screen again.
    2. Detach and reattach the Keyboard.
      1. Unplug your Surface and detach the keyboard.
      2. Make sure there's no debris, damage or anything that may inhibit a connection.
      3. Re-attach the keyboard, making sure that all the magnets touch the bottom edge of your Surface.
    3. Get the latest updates. Check any pending updates available. Open Settings> Windows updates > Check for updates. Also check optional updates available.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, kindly give answers to the following questions so we can further isolate your issue and formulate another appropriate troubleshooting steps.

    • What version of Windows and its build you are currently using?
    • Does the auto rotation pop up when the keyboard is detached?

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia
