A Microsoft support article says that any Surface model with USB-C socket can be charged with a USB-C cable. It works on my Surface Go but not my Pro 7. Any ideas please.

    Hi ChrisWAinsworth,

    Thank you for the response.

The Surface Pro 7+ would show the "Use recommended charger" message when you use the USB-C charger since they are lower than 60W and not enough to charge the Surface. You are able to charge the Surface Go 2 with this charger though since the Surface Go has a lower power requirement compared to the Surface Pro 7+. With that, I would recommend trying a USB-C PD charger with a higher wattage, preferably 60W or higher.

Thank you for your quick reply Marion. I’ve been using a couple of 14w 3rd party usb chargers as well as the usb port on my Pro 7 charger to connect the USB-C cable. All of these combinations of charger and cable work with my Surface Go but not my Pro 7 which comes up with a message saying “use recommended charger”. I assume my cable is ok as it works with my Go. My usb charger is not 60w so I understand it won’t support Fast Charge on the Pro 7 but I thought it should do a slow charge as per the Go.

    Best regards, Chris

    Hi ChrisWAinsworth,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. I understand that you're having trouble charging your Surface Pro 7 through the USB-C port.

First, may I know what are you trying to use in charging the device through USB-C? Is it a power bank? How much power output does it have?

Please note that in charging Surface devices through the USB port, we recommend using a USB-C PD charger that provides at least the same wattage as the power supply that was designed for your Surface. The Surface Go comes with the 24W power supply while the Surface Pro 7 comes with the 65W power supply. With that, the charger that you are using may not be providing enough power to charge the Surface Pro 7 through the USB-C port. Please see this page for more details in charging Surface through USB-C: USB-C and Fast Charging for Surface - Microsoft Support

If you've confirmed that the power delivery of the charger that you are using meets the requirement which is 60W or higher and still the issue persists, please try using a different USB-C cable to see if the issue persists. It's possible that the cable you're using is faulty or not compatible with your Surface Pro 7.

If using a different cable doesn't work, there are a few other things we can try. Here are some possible causes and solutions:

    1. Check the USB-C port: Inspect the USB-C port on your Surface Pro 7 for any damage or debris. If there is any debris, gently clean the port with a soft, dry brush. If there is damage to the port, you may need to contact Microsoft support for repair options.
    2. Update your Surface Pro 7: Make sure that your Surface Pro 7 is up to date with the latest software updates. To check for updates, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    3. Check the drivers; and run diagnostics: Check for the Surface drivers' health through the Surface app and run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit to run some system checks and repairs. See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface app and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Support

Let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Marrion
