stylus doesnt work as a mouse? why

Thank for getting back to me.. i've spend over 30 hours complaining since it must be implemented in every app, and i logged bug in Visual Studio 2022 and its preview, where it works only in the Copilot/Chat text box. Its used to work, it worked for one build that was rolled back. its

They are great designer, Nokia people, i have one again. its solid. so closed by a bot for lack of votes.

since its closed i cant say how bad this is. drag and drop like voice command should be a system wide universal functionality. there are 4+ different voice controllers and copilots in there now, i dont see too much good coming from that, they will block each other.

the way the current feature is "as Designed". i saw the lasso in notepad after applying the youtuberts fixes. i don't know how to use it.. in Notepad ++ it works. In chrome there are complaints it does not work.. it doesn not work in this editor. the pen is a very precise selector and the grips are different every where.. drag and drop via stylus  was  this year  REMOVED FROM both visual studio2022 and 2022 preview and VS CODE .   drag aand drop stylus editing  does work in the GITPilot or chatgpt request text box in the same visual studio.

   Im not the only one with a strong reaction because im a developer and i had to pay about 1250$ extra for this laptop to prototype  touch mobile apps, also for my back surgery and sitting 16 hours a day if  can literally kill you.  with thrombosis and such,because i i7 runs  i now use a mechanical keyboard and mouse. as if it were a desktop.

 i hoped to take the laptop lay down , and debug at least  consume content, debug, and inspect and edit in this mode..  So i never use that mode because of this one simple easy to fit bug. slightly offtopic: im not going to write by ink, much or at all, but using voice access especially with a good studio mic is great, , but it does not use context . this isnt for disabled, its for everyone so they dont get disabled.  its sooo close to being a great ui. but that is another issue.

 so this tiny flaw is a serious issue in the flag ship product line of "productivity software" not engagement software.
 it is really just the text selection and editing use case  for now that's badly broken.

THE FIX
pen options settings.. not buried anywhere... "Let me use the stylus as a mouse , remove the (when available) should have choices modified use stylus as mouse if no mouse is attached or in tablet mode, always, if application doesn't manage it, maybe if ( message unhandled) or Never .
Well some of the apps do nothing if you select touch and try to move text. maybe then it should just do it instead of nothing, or have option to override stylus and use as a mouse in except, ( list of apps: mabye those that are very specialized for design but not text editors**) .** this is very easy low impact change. I worked at Autodesk for 9 years i know that bullies and force the worse decisions or the meetings are endless. i don't get paid build consensus to outline what i think everyone wants.. i see it.. i feel it.. just try and if someone (probably a VP i would guess) pushes back i can talk to them and find out what is the reason.. i can show all the complains and the last lead product designer tweeted why he resigned , its inconsistent UI that crashed planes in ww2 due to inconsistency,he raised all the important points, but he had to leave. so someone is bullying i would suspect, anyways i hope you fix it or someone will make a new Start is Back

EVEN more easy "low hanging fruit"
the eraser or any button could map to keys like undo, closed. its not a real pencil that will will turn around and erase with.. could just map to any key or there could be a script for that.. i tried one , didn't work.

ok that took another 2 hours.. its as concise and clear as i could make it. if you google stylus and mouse and surface you'll see how many people are annoyed.. and don't log bugs. they expect QA /testers to do that.

This is in general since i finally have the attention of someone who knows the product.

or revisit design, count clicks eliminate overdetermined/ redundant UI , instructions, use the AI , put context to voice, consolidate file feature search, indexing, hands free windows and app... Google is trying this but MSFT is better positioned to lead on this.. ive send out a design that's one box and one mic. command query everything .. ive done software for 30+ years now just AI and tooling for scientists some a Nobel Laureates I'd really prefer not to have to try to push to get bugs fixed , i just am not going to mac or linux anytime soon , after like 3 decades of windows.. seeing so get so close to the finish line and not crossing its frustrating!!! i told someone about a voice ui like you have they said yea in 20 years.. you could have it in 2 months.

thanks if anyone doesn't think this is the best way please i want to learn not pontificate .. everyone i show seemed to expect it to be a mouse when you don't have one. especially on a big precise editor, that's not a phone UI...

and if it wont get fixed id like to know , may need to consult for my little gripes or worse, get some OSS people together to sort this out.. find another editor, or make a grand unified context AI voice command query UI maybe.. ive got too many projects already. but ill help if dont make sense or is more complex than i see.. still i am trained to make low impact fixes late cycle in 40 yr old codebase. (Autocad) so i think this would require a quick meeting and one one developers day,at most..

i did log that feedback.. its not going to get fixed based on how it was grouped.    it says it was fixed l in an insider build. i dont see it

course and each app can implement drag and drop. to handle the WM_Pointer message, but if they don't, they can come through as mouse messages.
or they used to. this is a functional regression. or if the switch is on it should work..

so i see an app Tablet Prod Studio that costs quite a bit. it forced me to install another app about touch. its super complex. its claims to have voice hot words, cntrl to the side button, and act like a mouse. so i wanted to try it. it going to bill me.

 but in my rage quit in general,  after the last 6 hours wasted and having to cut my losses..   i threw teh pen,   at a wall i knew about where it was.  pen finder doesnt work.    i just spend 2 hours searching for it.  

my life is a living hell and the more physically and mentally illl i get the problem just compound.

shes chews almost nothing of value because shes is a wonderful intelligent dog who trys to get me away from my computer and into the sunshine..
so mayhe the pen has found a use as dog boredom chew toy... my poor dog. wanting me off the computer. shes out playing shes not a house pet.

The Ai is hlepoing me fix it.. ill put a team togheter for a unified UI that include voice and UI consoliatinos.. i really just wanted surface to work.. if you had a senior UI designer wiht exec power call me i can tell him in 5 min how to fix it and show him all the pain.. ill do it free.

ok TLDR.. the instructions you send work on some text editors but thats really harder than it is when it works. thanks for sending me them.. but its not accurate.

60 seconds: my pen has one side button.. its the first surface studio laptop.
bring up wordpad and notepad. put some text a few lines of this long letter.

select from notepad and drop to word pad DRAG AND COPY.

select from  word pad  drop to notepad  DRAG AND CUT.

inconsistent. but, you dont have to press the side button.!!! its easier.

works just like a mouse. that's it.. on text. you select, lift and drag, lift (DONE)..

\So since you dont really have to press the one side button it could just map to CNTL!!! .. horray you have a tablet wiht a pen that can do precise edits. , when voice command looks in some trouble. even thoug i told exactly how to do it.

it took me 100 hours .. since you don't really have to press the one side button it could just do CNTL!!! , when voice command looks in some trouble. even though i told exactly how to do it.a total of 100 hours investigation

May I know which Surface device are you using the Surface pen with since you mentioned that you do not have a trackpad and the Surface Laptop Studio has a trackpad? For reference, see: Find out which Surface model you have - Microsoft Support

Firstly, it's important to note that your pen can be used throughout Windows, similar to how you would use a mouse or keyboard. See: How to use your Surface Pen - Microsoft Support

If this option is not working for you, there may be a few possible causes.

One possible cause could be that the Surface app is not up to date. I recommend checking for updates in the Microsoft Store and installing any available updates for the Surface app.

Another possible cause could be that the pen driver is not up to date. I recommend checking for updates in the Device Manager and installing any available updates for the pen driver.

Regarding mapping the side button to control, this is not a feature that is currently available on Surface devices. However, you may be able to achieve this functionality using third-party software or by creating a custom script.
