I found I was doing too much.

Maybe it's due to a new version of Airpods.

This is what worked for me after watching a video on how to connect to an Android:

    1. Just open the case, keeping the airpods inside it.
    2. If you're pairing/connecting for the first time, the light between the airpods in the case will be white and blinking. You don't have to do anything more to the case and DON'T press the button in the back of the case. If for some reason, the case light is orange or green when you open the case, press the button in the back of the case until it turns white and then release the button.
    3. Go to Bluetooth settings and click to add the airpods. When you see the airpods on the list, click the list and WAIT until it says they're paired and connected. DON'T click the connect box. When its says it's paired and connected, THEN put the airpods in your ears.
    4. When you're finished using the airpods, just click disconnect in the Bluetooth settings.
    5. Next time you want to connect, keep the airpods in their case. Open the case and see that the green light is on. Keep the case open and the airpods in the case and click Connect in the Bluetooth airpod settings. Wait until it says it's connected. THEN put the airpods in your ears.

This works for me: Spotify on my Surface sounds great coming through the airpods plus they work great for speaking through Zoom. Enjoy!

    Hi, AdamM_2005!

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We are sorry to learn you encounter issues connecting your AirPods Pro to your Surface Pro (5th Gen) and appreciate the time you have given here to let us know about your concern.

Let's begin by making sure that your Airpods Pro is in pairing mode. Please refer to the Apple Support page for more information.

Make sure that your AirPods is inside its charging case.

Open its lid and you'll see the light come on, indicating the charging status.

Press and hold the circular button on the back of its case. In general, the light should blink to indicate it is ready to pair.

On your Surface Pro (5th Gen), please go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices> turn on Bluetooth > Add Bluetooth or other device> Bluetooth > click the AirPods option from the list > Wait for a few seconds to see the confirmation that your device and AirPods are paired and connected.

We hope this helps you out, we highly encourage you to inform our Community by clicking on Yes or marking my post as an answer. This will help other members who may have the same issue as you. Otherwise, don't hesitate to update us so we can further assist you.

    Kind regards,

This has been the most frustrating part about owning a surface laptop. Each time I want to connect my airpods it takes 10 minutes of connecting and reconnecting until it either works out of nowhere or I just decide to use my phone. I know it's a relatively small issue, but it seriously makes me question why I bought this computer.

I'll second that point, Sara. I've got the same thing going on with mine.  all there and looking as if it would work, however, there's no volume.  I even went into other settings menus and looked at adding te airpods pro as the input or output default device, and it's not in the drop down of options.
