I found I was doing too much.
Maybe it's due to a new version of Airpods.
This is what worked for me after watching a video on how to connect to an Android:
- Just open the case, keeping the airpods inside it.
- If you're pairing/connecting for the first time, the light between the airpods in the case will be white and blinking. You don't have to do anything more to the case and DON'T press the button in the back of the case. If for some reason, the case light is orange or green when you open the case, press the button in the back of the case until it turns white and then release the button.
- Go to Bluetooth settings and click to add the airpods. When you see the airpods on the list, click the list and WAIT until it says they're paired and connected. DON'T click the connect box. When its says it's paired and connected, THEN put the airpods in your ears.
- When you're finished using the airpods, just click disconnect in the Bluetooth settings.
- Next time you want to connect, keep the airpods in their case. Open the case and see that the green light is on. Keep the case open and the airpods in the case and click Connect in the Bluetooth airpod settings. Wait until it says it's connected. THEN put the airpods in your ears.
This works for me: Spotify on my Surface sounds great coming through the airpods plus they work great for speaking through Zoom. Enjoy!
