Laptop touch screen not working

My laptop screen suddenly stopped working one day and I haven’t been able to restore the touch screen.I searched how to fix it so I went to device manager and human interfaces but the option of “HID-compliant touch screen” but it wasn't even an option. How can I get my laptop to be touch screen again?? theres a very little chance that a helper is actually going to respond and if one does and asks if i reset or tell me to update my laptop that is the most useless piece of information I have ever heard because I have already done that and it has done literally nothing. Windows keeps breaking on it own.

    Surface Pro 8

    I believe I have Version ‘22H2’

    Windows 11

I have opened device manager and i clicked on View and show hidden devices. I clicked the action button and it did not have an option to scan. I rechecked the humans interface devices again and it did not appear.

I **** down my laptop and opened the UEFI page and my touch screen works, what should i do next?

    Thanks for responding quickly.

    Hello Samantha,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your laptop’s touch screen stops working unexpectedly. I am here to help. Let’s troubleshoot and isolate this issue together.

    • Will you confirm the Surface device do you have? a Surface Laptop or a Surface Pro?
    • May I know what version of Windows your device is currently running?

Here are some steps you can try:

    1. Show Hidden Devices in Device Manager:
    • Open device manager.
    • Go to the View tab and select Show hidden devices.
    • Then, go to the Actions tab and choose Scan for hardware changes.
    • Check if the HID-compliant touch screen appears under Human Interface Devices now.
    1. Boot to UEFI and test touch functionality. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a type of software that helps Windows communicate with your Surface’s hardware. Because UEFI operates independently of Windows, testing hardware in UEFI will work if you have a hardware issue.
    • Follow these steps to boot to UEFI and test touch functionality:
      1. Go to Start > Power > Shut down.
      2. When Surface is off, press and hold the volume up button and press the power button until a Microsoft or Surface logo appears onscreen.
      3. Once you are in UEFI, touch your Surface screen and see if it responds normally. Try to navigate in UEFI by tapping various menu items.

For other troubleshooting steps, see What to try if your Surface touchscreen doesn't work - Microsoft Support.

Let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

I appreciate you for responding back. Let's troubleshoot this issue further.

Kindly try these additional steps below:

Check for any pending updates available. Also check optional updates available by going to. Settings > Windows updates > Check for updates > Advanced options and select optional updates.

If problem persist, knowing that touchscreen works in UEFI settings, we may need to reset your Surface using a USB recovery drive. This option will reimage the entire device and reload Windows including the drivers and firmware. It is the most complete form of Reset and it will wipe out everything on the device. So make sure to back up everything prior doing these steps. You will need also a 16GB/32GB of flash driver that must be formatted into FAT32 prior to downloading the Recovery image. See steps below for guidance.

    To download the Recovery Image:

    1. Visit the page to Download the recovery image for your Surface
    2. Sign in with your Microsoft Account
    3. From the list of Surface devices available, select the device that you need a recovery image for
    4. Please note that while you will only be presented with devices that are currently registered on your account, you will also be presented with the option to get an image for a different type of device. If you try to use this option, you will be prompted to enter the serial number for that device.
    5. Download the recovery image using the button on the page
    6. When the download bar pops up at the bottom of your screen, save the file in a location you will be able to find it.

Note: Formatting a recovery drive will erase anything that is already stored on your USB drive. Make sure to transfer any important data from your USB drive to another storage device before using it to create a Surface USB recovery drive.

     Format USB Drive:

    1. Insert your USB drive into the USB port of your PC.
    2. From the desktop, open File Explorer
    3. Tap and hold or right-click on the USB drive and choose Format.
    4. Select FAT32 as the file system and enter a Volume label to name the USB drive, such as RECOVERY, and then tap or click Start
    5. Tap or click OK to erase the contents of the USB drive
    6. Tap or click OK when the format is complete

    Create a recovery drive:

    1. On your Surface or PC, open recovery image that you downloaded by double-clicking it or right click then select Extract and then Extract all.
    2. Select the USB drive you formatted earlier for the location and click Extract.

Use a USB recovery drive to reset your Surface:

    1. Shutdown the Surface
    2. Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port
    3. Press and hold the volume-down (-) rocker
    4. Press and release the power button
    5. When the Surface logo appears, release the volume-down (-) rocker
    6. Surface will start the recovery software on the USB recovery drive
    7. When prompted, choose your language options and keyboard layout.
    8. Select Troubleshoot
    9. Select Recover from a Drive. Choose Remove Everything and Fully Clean the Drive. Recovering this PC.
    10. If prompted, select Repartition the drives
    11. If prompted for BitLocker Key, tap Skip this Drive.
