Surface Pro 4 Keyboard not working / type cover keyboard driver missing

Hi.

I have a surface Pro 4 and the type cover keyboard is not working.

The driver has gone missing (just shows HID keyboard device) so I can't do what the other forums have said an uninstall the driver.

I have installed the SP4 driver updates and still not working.

I also did the two-button restart and disabled/enabled the keyboard in UEFI. No joy.

This is really frustrating. Other people have this issue:

I'm on 10.0.18632 Build 18632 MS Windows 10 Pro

Can anyone help with this?

If your problem is like mine it doesn't appear because the computer can't tell the keyboard is being attached.

Never knew if it was software or hardware problem.

    My choices were:

    1. Buy a bluetooth keyboard ($80, which I did, and which is working fine)
    2. Pay Microsoft $980 to get it fixed. Er, no thanks.

    Hi

    I am on

    Edition Windows 10 Pro

    Version 2004

    Installed on 16/09/2020

    OS build 19041.508

Experience: Windows Feature experience pack 120.2212.31.0

    Nick

    hey Nick,

I'm facing with exactly the same issue with OS Build 19041.508, Version 2004. And I did all those steps you tried thousand- times! ! Fully understand how you feel!

Besides, I 'm not quite sure if you noticed there is a so-called '' Surface Integration Service'' on the panel of ''Bluetooth &other devices", which can be found in control panel as well, categorized as ''Unspecified''. When go further to its Properties, shown as followed:

    Device type: System devices

    Manufacturer: Microsoft

    Location: Location 1(SID_DEVICE_01)

Device Status: no drivers are installed for this device.

Therefore, I'm wondering if this is the cause that makes the typecover gone. However, I have NO clue to fix it. :(

Waiting for Janette_Z/ microsoft sevice team.

    Don't let me down please.

    Hi Janette

Thank you again. I appreciate you are trying to help, but your replies so far have done the opposite. Please

    1. Read fully the initial details I gave, so you don't end up asking me to do things I have already tried
    2. Provide instructions with pathways that are actually those on my machine.

    In reply to your points.

    1. There is an update & security section - though not through the pathway you. mentioned, and it does not have a 'recovery' option like you mentioned (just activation, find my device, for developers, windows insider programme, and device encryption). This is frustrating that your instructions and what is on my machine simply do not match.
    2. The trackpad / mouse and keyboard are totally not working in any situation UEFI or anything else.
    3. As mentioned in my initial report, I have already downloaded the msi for my version 10.0.18632 Build 18632 MS Windows 10 Pro.

    I downloaded this SurfacePro4_Win10_18362_20.034.43185.0.msifrom here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49498

This failed to solve the problem, as I mentioned before. I am not going to do this a fourth time.

    1. I was able to run the DISM.exe / Online / Cleanup-image / Restorehealth command.

    This completed successfully.

It is STILL not working. :-(

When I go to device manager under keyboards it lists HID keyboard device but not the Type Cover keyboard - this is the driver that is STILL missing. (See image)

Can you PLEASE help - but actually give filepaths / menu paths that match what comes up on my machine, and not ask me to things I have already told you I have done and which failed.

    Nick

    Hi Janette

Thanks for your reply. I had already tried several of these things (like the two-key restart, which I did mention) when I posted.

Nothing on the keyboard works - trackpad or any keys at all.

Unfortunately the path you mention above is not available. When I go to settings there is no 'updates/security' option.

Just:  system, devices, phone, network & internet, personalisation, apps, accounts, time & language, gaming.

Frustrating not to be able to follow your instructions.

When I search 'troubleshoot' I tried 'find and fix other problems' for 'keyboard' and it proudly told me 'no changes or updates were necessary' despite the fact that the keyboard driver does not exist in my machine.

I did the same for 'windows update' and got 'nothing to fix'.

I type 'UEFI' into the start/windows bar and it finds nothing. So I just did another two-key restart into Surface UEFI and under Devices can confirm Type Cover Port is enabled (in my original post I did explain I disabled then re-enabled this).

Can you help, please? (but give instructions that match what is possible on my machine / pathways)?

    Nick

    Hi, NickHopwood!

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your concerns regarding the Type Cover of your Surface Pro 4.

To initially troubleshoot the issue, kindly detach the Type Cover. Check if there are any debris that may inhibit connection and clean it when needed, then force shutdown the device and restart.

1.) Press and hold the power button until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release the power button.

2.) Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

If that doesn't work, use this two-button shutdown process to make sure your Surface turns off completely:

    1.     Press and hold the power button on your Surface until the screen turns off (about 30 seconds), then release it.

    2.     Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time until the screen turns off (about 15 seconds), then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.

    3.     After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.

    4.     Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

Then re-attach the Type Cover and check if it works. May we also know if both keys and touchpad are affected?

If the issue is still present, please go to the Surface UEFI

    1.    Select StartSettings > Update & security  > Recovery.

    2.    Under Advanced startup, select Restart Now.

    3.    Under Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings, and then select Restart.

    4.    Verify if keyboard (arrow key) allows you to progress through the menus, or the touchpad allows control of the mouse arrow.

    5.    Go to Devicesas well and check Type Cover port, see if it is enabled or not. Make sure to enable.

    6.     Hit on Exit, then Restart

Let us know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Janette_Z
