Will my keyboard get worse over time after water spill?

Hello everyone!

A little over a month ago I had an online interview for a job and as it started, I knocked my glass of water over and it spilled onto my Surface Book 2 keyboard. Unfortunately I could not turn off my laptop and flip it around to try to dry it out, so I dried it as best as I could with a cloth.

Right after the interview ended--it was about 20-30 minutes in length--I powered down my laptop and flipped it over. I also tried using a blow dryer with my laptop flipped over to get rid of any possible excess moisture.

My question is related to the issue I am having now and wondering if it will get worse. My laptop seems to work fine, but every once in awhile as I am typing, one of my keys will seemingly jam and the keyboard will type that letter/number/character over and over again until I hit backspace, which makes it stop after a second or two.

Will my keyboard get worse over time or is the issue I am having now the one I will have to deal with from now on? I fortunately haven't noticed any other issues (yet) thankfully.

Thank you very much in advance for your help! I did receive a job offer by the way, so I suppose it was (somewhat) worth damaging my laptop for.

    Hi Matthew Y.

Thank you for reaching out Microsoft Community. Congratulations!

We're sorry to know that the Surface device was spilled with water. Well, I wouldn't be able to confirm if that's the only problem you'll be experiencing through time with the keyboard of your Surface Book but there will be possibilities that the keyboard keys will no longer work anymore. I can say this because it happened to one of my devices that was spilled with water and I thought it was just okay because it was still functioning up until I can no longer see anything on the screen and some of the buttons don't work anymore. In the event that the device stops working, the best resolution we can provide is to process a replacement for that unit if you'll prefer to get it replaced.

As of the moment, please follow the troubleshooting steps below for us  to see if the keyboard issues you're experiencing now can still be fixed.

    Open Device Manager

    Expand Keyboard

Right-click on keyboard drivers available and select "uninstall device". If there's another dialog that will show up before you can uninstall those drivers, please leave  the box unchecked and just proceed uninstalling the keyboard drivers.

If it doesn't fix the current keyboard issue, then this is the after-effect of the water spill and it's considered as a hardware problem already.

    Kind Regards,

Crest_Z, thank you for your reply. I haven't had any more issues since I followed your troubleshooting steps! Perhaps I was lucky and my keyboard (and laptop) didn't suffer any damage.
