Surface Pro 7 camera not working on windows 11 update.

Im not sure when it broke as I very rarely need my webcam, but I cannot find the drivers to update my webcam and it never starts. On intel there is no download for webcam drivers so I am not sure where to update it and identify what webcam my laptop uses.

Hi, I had the same issue when upgrading to Windows 11 on my Surface Pro 7, camera was working fine on Windows 10 however stops working in Windows 11 with the same error message.

I tried everything from checking AV, disabling and enabling camera in privacy settings and UEFI as well as reinstalling the driver update pack for Surface Pro 7 and nothing worked.

I did however find a solution that is currently working for me.

I went into device manager and uninstalled the following:

    1. Intel(R) AVStream Camera
    2. Surface Camera Front
    3. Surface Camera Rear
    4. Surface IR Camera Front

I then restarted my PC (not sure if a necessary step but I did it anyway), and opened back up device manager and scanned for hardware changes.

this reinstalled the drivers and my webcam both front and back are now working again.

    Hopefully this helps?

I have a very similar issue. I just purchased a Surface Pro 8. In the original setup I enable facial recognition. I checked for microsoft updates and I think there were 26 or so of them in the queue. I let them all install. I shut down the SP8 and let it restart. Immediately got an error message saying it could not turn the camera on and that I needed to log in with passcode. I can't get the camera to operate anymore through the Camera app or at startup. There is clearly a driver issue. I did some searching and it appears this is a fairly common issue with this Intel TGL AVStream Camera installed on these Surface Pros. I tried the standard actions of trying to update the driver etc. but the system tells me the most recent drive is already installed. I removed the camera under device manager and let it reinstall. Still didn't work.

this is a big problem as I need this system for business related zoom meetings. It was one of the primary reasons i made this very expensive purchase. HELP!!

    HI Ner07,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. I'm sorry to hear about the issue that you are having on the camera of your Surface Pro 7.

May I know if you are prompted for an error message when you try to access the camera? If yes, please provide the error message.

Does it happen on all the camera of the device (Front and Rear) including the IR camera for Windows Hello Face?

Kindly try these steps below to troubleshoot the issue:

1: Make sure Camera is enabled in the UEFI settings

See this page for the steps on How to get to the UEFI settings

On the UEFI screen, go to Devices

Make sure that the IR, Front and Rear Camera options are enabled

If already enabled, disable the options for about 10 seconds then back to enable

                                   Select Exit > Restart now

    2: Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (microsoft.com)

    3: Check for Windows Update

Go to Windows Settings > Update & Security and select Check for updates

Make sure all updates need are installed including Optional updates

    4: Update drivers and firmware

Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by going to Settings > System > About

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro

Then click the link next to Surface Pro 7 then click Download on the next page.

Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.

After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

5: Run System File Checker Tool

See: Using System File Checker in Windows (microsoft.com)

If still the issue persist, kindly check on Device Manager if there is a camera or USB driver that is having an error. If there is, please provide us with the error code and name of the driver.
