That would work but there are two problems with it. First, it has multiple ports. Adding connections to the port used for ethernet is a bad idea. Second it's USB-3. Unless you're using your USB-C port for something else it's the best choice. Here's a recommendation. Must I get a docking station to connect a Surface Book 1 to a cat5 cable?
I have a Surface Book 1. I need to do some testing of our home network. To do that, I need to connect the Surface Book to the network using a cat5 cable. But it does not have a cat5 port. Is there any way I can connect it other than buying a docking station?
Thanks

2021-04-08T17:48:59+00:00 Ethernet = Cat 5 or Cat 6 or Cat 7. They all use the same connector. Higher number = higher speed. If it says ethernet it's the right connector. The connector itself is RJ-45.

2021-04-08T16:51:46+00:00 No, you are better off not using a dock. The Surface dock ethernet connection is unreliable. I found that the best ethernet connection is to use a USB-C to ethernet adapter. I use the one from UNI. You can also use a standard USB to ethernet adapter but if you have a gigabit connection it won't provide full speed.
