Locked at 30 fps when playing games

Hi,

I have the surface book 2 15" with i7 and recently when I try to play video games at a 4k resolution I am capped at 30 fps. Usually, I should be getting around 60-80 fps when playing Valorant and League of Legends. A couple days ago I noticed this issue and would have to restart 3-4 times until it would go back to normal at 60-80 fps. Please help, I am clueless to what the issue is as the graphics card should be able to run higher than 30fps. I also had this laptop for 2 years now so I'm not sure if this has to do with the battery.

I have tried:

  • updating graphics card drivers
  • use better optimal settings in the video games
  • turning off power save mode on nvidia control centre
  • turning off vsync
  • checked for windows updates
  • checked if the nvidia graphics card is being used for these games (it is, I checked the task manager performance tab)
  • computer is plugged in always
  • reinstalled both games
  • uncapped fps in both games

If I change my resolution it does help the fps a lot but the screen is very distorted. Please help, any advice would do! Thanks

    Hi, Thanks for the suggestions,

When I loaded the game I checked my temperature pc and it was around 60-70 which I think might be the problem. I tried to unplug as you suggested but it made my fps in-game very unstable.  Are there any tips to keep my laptop at a lower temperature? I tried to get rid of any unnecessary background applications. I also have a keyboard, mouse, and usb to ethernet cable plugged in. I noticed sometimes that my usb ports would disconnect and my keyboard would be flashing on and off. I feel like it might have something to do with the temperature as well.

    Hi NatalieS18,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry. We appreciate the effort in performing the troubleshooting steps.

Here are the methods that you can try:

    • Try to unplug the device while playing, playing a heavy game on a device which is plugged in to a charger the whole time could cause a rise on the temperature and would affect the performance.
    • Check the device temperature while playing the game.
    • set the device performance to Best. Go to the battery icon > slide the slider to Best Performance.
    • Make sure to close all unnecessary apps running on the background. Go to task manager > right-click the app and choose end task.
    • Try running just the game and nothing else then observe.

The Surface Book is not a gaming machine. Mine gets hot just playing visual novels. Even if you select the Nvidia processor for a game in the Nvidia Control Panel it will continue to use and overheat the Intel processor.
