Currys Cloud Back up - C: Drive folder taking over Surface - help!

When I have looked at the storage on my Microsoft Surface Laptop - it's starting to get full even though I don't have that many apps etc. on it.

I have run a utility called Treesize to try and find the issue - I have found a folder within my C: drive named LiveDrive - which I think is Currys online drive. It is sitting at 103.7GB!!

Can anyone tell me why this app is taking over my PC when I assumed Cloud back up meant it was cloud?

Can I delete the files / change the settings to stop this?

    Hi Paul Richardson2,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Based on the information you provided, it appears that you are experiencing a problem with your Surface Laptop 5. Specifically, your device’s storage is almost full due to a cloud backup service called Live Drive, which is provided by Currys.

Currys Cloud Backup is a cloud-based backup service that enables you to store your files and data on the internet. However, it also generates a local folder on your device where it stores a copy of your files for offline access. This is probably why you are seeing a large folder on your C: drive.

To free up space on your Surface Laptop, you can try deleting some of the files from your Currys Cloud Backup folder. However, I would recommend checking withCurry's support firstto ensure that deleting these files will not affect your backup or cause any data loss.

Alternatively, you can change the settings of your Currys Cloud Backup to only store files online and not create a local copy on your computer. This should help prevent the folder from taking up space on your C: drive in the future.

To change the settings of your Currys Cloud Backup to only store files online and not create a local copy on your computer, you can try the following steps:

    1. Open the Currys Cloud Backup app on your device.
    2. Navigate to the settings menu.
    3. Look for an option to change the backup mode to “online-only” or “cloud-only”.
    4. Select this option to ensure that files are only stored in the cloud and not on your device.

If you’re unable to find this option, you can try contacting Currys customer support for further assistance.

I hope I have answered all your questions. Thank you for your understanding. Please let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Christopher.

    Hi,

I had the same issue, ironically 3 days after you. The advice that @ChristopherCol has given I believe is correct. I emailed Curry's describing my/this issue but got a very poor generic answer in reply, however it was just enough to 'fix' the problem.

It is possible to store files in the Cloud only and not on your laptop or computer by using the Online Drive. The Online Drive should appear on your Computer as the L: drive, or you can right-click the Cloud Storage icon at the bottom-right of your screen, then select 'Open Online drive Folder' to go straight there.

You can use drag & drop or cut & paste to put your files and folders into the Online Drive, and they will automatically sync with the Cloud. Please right-click on the files / folders, select 'Cloud Backup', then 'Do not keep a copy on this computer' to free up the space. You will see a basic grey icon for files not kept on the computer, and access the files by double-clicking them, through *www.curryscloudbackup.co.uk* , or through the app on smartphone / tablets.

When a file is set to be online only it will only be accessible when connected to internet and the file would need to be downloaded every time that you want to open or use the file.

My issue occurred when I changed my email address for Curry's Cloud Backup, once I logged in with my new credentials my hard drive filled up (maxed out) specifically the LiveDrive folder (I used a similar tool as you to discover this). I fixed it in the short term by stopping, then deleting the Curry's Cloud Backup desktop app and when uninstalling (after I freed some space) it asks if you want to delete local cache. Saying yes deletes all the data in LiveDrive on your hard drive but leaves your files online. Problem fixed, yes but only if you never use the desktop app again. As soon as Curry's Cloud Backup desktop app is installed again it does the same. It is interesting to note that when installing Curry's Cloud Backup and if you click advanced options during the installation process it then asks to confirm the location of the LiveDrive folder (the problem folder!).

So the permanent fix... when re-installing the Curry's Cloud Backup app it will create a new drive in Windows Explorer, probably drive letter 'L'. The drive is your online backed up files and should display the top level folders you have backed up. As soon as the app is installed and you see this new drive, right click on each folder, select 'Show more options' and there will be a menu item called 'Cloud Backup', from that select the option 'Do Not Store Files On This Computer'. You might get a popup which quickly scrolls through the files contained in the folder but once it has disappeared repeat this process for the next folder until all are done. That's it!

The LiveDrive folder will not increase in size and the files that are contained in it are MB in size, not GB.

    Hope this helps.
