MS Surface 7 Laptop Connect 3 External Monitors

Hi,

I have an older Surface laptop 4 that displays 3 external monitors, but I can't get my new Surface laptop 7 to display more than 2 external monitors. I tried lowering the refresh rate and used a few other troubleshooting methods I read online but I can't figure it out. The 3rd monitor shows a black screen and is not able to be detected. It will run 2 external monitors with the actual laptop monitor as well. Surely there's a way to connect 3 monitors to this awesome new device?

    Hi Jacob,

Thank you for all the additional information here.

After reviewing all the relevant information, I would like to say that Microsoft does not actually mandate that the Surface Laptop 7 can only connect to a maximum of two external monitors, but mentions in the relevant support link what resolution and star rate can be supported when connecting two external monitors:

Supported external display resolution and refresh rates for Surface - Microsoft Support

When you select the Surface Laptop 4 here, you're also getting the same resolution and refresh rate parameters as when you connect two additional external monitors.

And my first reply to your message actually referred to here:

However, since neither you nor the customer below is using a Microsoft docking station, I have no way to confirm whether a third-party docking station can connect more than two external monitors outside the Surface Laptop 7, as this involves whether the docking station is fully compatible with the Surface Laptop 7.

That's why I recommend using a Surface-specific docking station in my first response, such as the Surface Thunderbolt 4:

Identify your Surface Dock and features - Microsoft Support ****

You'll notice that this Surface-specific dock has three USB 4 Thunderbolt™ 4 ports for video display, so it's obviously possible to connect at least three external displays.

So I think the Surface Laptop 7 will support more than two external monitors, but you'll need a dedicated Surface docking station.

    Hi Mitchell (MS Support),

I've got a similar question. I use a Dell Thunderbolt K20A001 Docking Station and works well with Dell PC and Chromebook but I can't seem to get the 3 external monitors working on the Surface Laptop 7 (I can only get 2) while not using the screen of the laptop itself (meaning I keep it closed). I'd rather not buy a new docking station.

I updated the GPU driver, Windows drivers and Docking Station Firmware (At least I tried but not 100% sure it took on the docking station firmware)

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance

Thank you for getting back with me and I’d be happy to share more information. I’m currently using a Baseus 17-in-1 USB C Docking Station to Cast on 3 Monitors with 100W PD USB-C Port, 4K HDMI*3, USB 3.0 * 5, LAN, SD/TF Cards Reader, Audio Port for Windows https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082R5S1MP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 It works flawlessly with my Surface Laptop 4 and Dell XPS 9520 connecting from the USB C port to dock and connecting via Hdmi to all external monitors. I recently upgraded to the SL 7 and love the performance, but it’s tough going from 3 to 2 external monitors.

I haven’t been able to find much information about this issue, but most comments online state the SL 7 can only connect to 2 external monitors because it’s on ARM system (I’m not very technical and don’t know what that means), but the device specs shows it can connect to 3+ monitors. Is there a way to confirm one of the docks you listed would allow me to connect 3 external monitors?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jacob

    Hello Jacob,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

If it's convenient, could you share with us here how you connected three external monitors to your Surface Laptop 4?

The Surface Laptop 4 comes with only one USB-A port and one USB-C port, and to connect three monitors, you'll obviously need a docking station, though you don't specify which docking product you're using here.

If it works well on your Surface Laptop 4, then in fact it's my opinion that this docking station is not faulty, it just may not be compatible with the Surface Laptop 7 you're using.

If you want to connect three or more external monitors on your Surface Laptop 7, my most direct recommendation is to use a Surface-specific Dock, such as Surface Dock 2 or Surface Thunderbolt 4:

Buy Microsoft Surface Dock 2 – Microsoft Surface ****

Buy Surface Thunderbolt™ 4 Dock (Ports, Compatibility, Price) - Microsoft Store

These docks have multiple available ports, enabling simultaneous connection of multiple external displays:
