Pop Ups saying my computer has viruses

My laptop has been working so well since I bought it. But all of a sudden it started giving me pop ups constantly about how i have viruses or to renew my anti virus plan which expired that i never signed up for.

Whenever i go to manage extensions it says i don’t have any or everything is already off.

I did all of the steps but they keep popping up.

I would like to know how to resolve the issue please.

Have a Wonderful day,

Sincerely, Iliana B

    Hello iliana bonilla,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community. I'm sorry to hear about this issue on your device. I understand how alarming it is to get that kind of notification.

It appears that this notification came from a third-party antivirus software. If you no longer wish to use that software, I highly recommend uninstalling it. We don't also recommend third-party antivirus as Surface devices are already equipped with Windows Security, a built-in to Windows 10 and includes an antivirus program called Microsoft Defender Antivirus. To get rid of the third-party antivirus, I would suggest visiting their official website for further instructions for removal of the software: McAfee KB - How to remove McAfee products from a PC that runs Windows (TS101331)

Disclaimer: This is a non-Microsoft website. The page appears to be providing accurate and safe information. Beware of ads on the site that may advertise products frequently classified as PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you decide to download.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    StevenK

    Iliana,

I don't think you received the complete information from either of the other two replies. Especially since you've stated that you never subscribed to McAfee. If you clicked remove on any of those warnings, or any options, you might have compromised your computer.

McAfee KB - Your browser displays fake McAfee notifications (TS102999) is what McAfee documents for this malware.

I don't know how compromised your Surface is, but since you never installed McAfee, in this case, you may want to wipe and reimage your Surface to remove all traces of this malware. Back up any files/documents/pictures, etc. you have stored locally because this will remove everything.

         Go to [https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage)

(with a different Windows computer if yours is not working properly, use any Windows computer - it does NOT have to be a Surface) and download a recovery image for your Surface. You will need a 16GB or 32GB USB stick (also called a flash drive) formatted FAT32 (use a Windows computer).  You can't use an actual external USB hard drive for this and don't use anything larger than a 32 GB USB stick. Best to purchase and use a new, previously unused USB stick for this. Use FULL format and not quick format and give the volume a name like surfboot. Unzip/extract the recovery zip to the root of the formatted USB stick.

There are full instructions and a video at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4023512/surface-creating-and-using-a-usb-recovery-drive#download but below are quick instructions.

    1. Make sure your Surface is turned off and plugged in, and then insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port.
    2. Press and hold the volume-down button while you press and release the power button.
    3. When the Microsoft or Surface logo appears, release the volume-down button.
    4. When prompted, select the language and keyboard layout you want.
    5. Select Troubleshoot , and then select Recover from a drive .

*If prompted for a recovery key, select Skip this drive at the bottom of the screen*.

    1. Note:
Be sure to select the Troubleshoot option on this screen. Don’t select the Use a device option. If you select the Use a device option, your Surface will reboot from the USB recovery drive again and the reset process will start over.
    2. Choose Fully clean the drive..
    3. Select Recover.
Surface restarts and displays the Surface logo while the reset process continues. This can take several minutes.

Hi iliana, what you are seeing are browser based push notifications which in this case are from Chrome.

Follow the instructions linked below to turn the notifications off for any sites you are not familiar with:
