Hey all! This last week I purchased the SLS with i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and 3050ti. I mostly use the machine for bare metal code development and light browsing but I also occasionally game with it. I played Valheim most of this weekend and noticed some strange performance issues and wanted to see if anyone else has the same issue. TL; DR at the bottom. Sorry in advance for the wall of text!

Essentially, while gaming I like to switch between playing in "laptop mode" and "stage mode" where the screen is pulled forward but the trackpad is still accessible. I noticed when switching between the two modes that the performance in Valheim changed dramatically. I used the built-in windows game bar performance tool to see my FPS in each mode. After about a half hour of gaming, performance in laptop mode was around 45-50 FPS with occasional dips to 15-20 FPS. In the exact same game locations with no other settings changed, changing the surface to stage mode would increase the framerate to around 70-80 fps. I'm going to test it with a few other games but wanted to know if anyone else had noticed this issue.

In-game settings and open programs are as follows:

  • 1440x900 resolution @ 120hz, full screen.
  • All sliders set to medium except vegetation quality set to high.
  • All other effects enabled except soft particles, bloom, and chromatic aberration.
  • Discord and OneNote were running in the background. All other apps were closed and only system services remained.
  • The laptop was plugged in to the provided power supply. I triple checked that the power supply was working and charging the device.
  • No external monitors.
  • A USB-C dock was connected with a USB dongle for wireless headphones was plugged in. A wireless Xbox Series S/X controller was used for game input.
  • Valheim was running through Steam using Vulkan.
  • Valheim+ mod installed.

If anyone else could test this and let me know if this is isolated or if they've experienced something similar with a different game/application, that would be awesome!

TL; DR: Surface Laptop Studio has worse performance in laptop mode vs. stage mode when playing graphically demanding games with Valheim used as an example. 45-50 fps in laptop mode, 70-80fps in stage mode with the same game settings.

    Hey there,

I usually play Rocket League or Fortnite. Both of these games dont take much processing of the pc. But what I noticed is, that in Fortnite, I'm getting up to 120fps and on Rocket League up to 150 fps.

May this be a good response for you. Please be aware, that the settings are set on the lowest possible.

    Kind regards,
    Jason
