Hello,

I got my surface pro 7 and pen last week. Everything was working great, but now my pen is not writing or erasing. It is connected via Bluetooth and my touch screen works when I use my fingers. Could someone please offer suggestions on how to get my pen to write again?

Thanks!

None of these steps fixed the problem with my pen. I just bought this pen. What should I do now?

Bluetooth is not involved in writing or drawing with the pen and it is a waste of time to trouble shoot bluetooth for this specific error. The Wintab drivers won't help unless you have specific apps that need this driver, so test with OneNote (see if you can write with finger in OneNote) and see if reseating the tip or a new AAAA battery helps. If possible, try your pen on someone else's Surface and their Surfae pen on yours. Note that pens do NOT need to be paired to write.

If you select the Draw menu, then pick a pen and then select the icon to draw with finger as shown below and can't make this work, then I don't think the pen is the problem.

    Let's try reinstalling some drivers:

    1. Select the search box in the taskbar, type

    device manager

    and then select Device Manager

    1. Click the arrow to the left of Human Interface Devices to expand.
    2. Right-click HID-compliant touch screen, and then select Uninstall. If there are 2, uninstall both. Don't delete if prompted.
    3. Then uninstall the Intel® Precise Touch Driver (don not delete if prompted)
    4. Restart

Does the pen work now/can you draw with your finger?

If you have a Best Buy or other retailer near you that sells Surface devices and they have one on display, you may be able to go to the store and test your pen on a display Surface device (does NOT need to be paired).

Since you just bought the SP7 and the pen, I'd return the pen for a full refund and repurchase it.

    Hello Elizabeth_962,

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry to learn about this issue on your pen.

In this case, it may be due to driver issue or software conflict. Please give these methods a try and see if issue still occurs or not:

    • Force a shut down and restart your Surface. It resets the hardware and clears all the cache and memory for your hardware.
    • Run Bluetooth troubleshooter. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooter > Bluetooth > run the troubleshooter.
    • Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check for Windows Update. Make sure to check View Optional features and select all necessary updates for your device. Restart the Surface after installing updates.
    • Download WinTab. Go to Download Surface Pro 4 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center. Click Download, then choose Wintab_x64_1.0.0.20.zip, select Next. Open file and extract all. Follow on-screen installation instructions.
    • Reinstall touch driver. Open Device Manager > Human Interface > Intel(R) Precise Touch Device. <Uninstall and re-install it>
    • Remove and reseat the pen tip (either by fingertip or extraction tool). Test on known app.
    • Reseat the AAAA battery in the pen, and test on known app (Change the battery in Surface Pen). Open pen and remove and reinstall the same battery to ensure good connection.

Let us know how it goes by simply responding on this thread.
