Touch keyboard doesn't show up when set it to "when no keyboard attached"

I use my surface book 3 as a tablet sometimes and found the touch keyboard wouldn't pop up automatically when I tap on text fields. I have to open it manually from the taskbar. Another way to make this work is to change "show the touch keyboard" to "always", but I don't want it to show up even when the keyboard is attached. Is there anyway I can solve it?

For some reason, it got fixed itself. Probably after the most recent update. Thanks anyway.

    Hello BingweiZhang,

Thank you so much for your response and for letting me know that the still persist to happen.

With that being said, there is already a need for us to do a factory reset. Before doing the reset, please make sure to backup all of the data. See this link for the step-by-step process: Restore or reset Surface for Windows - Microsoft Support

Please let me know if this works or not.

    Kind regards,

    Rolando S.

Thanks for your reply. It seems like my setting is somehow different from your response. Here's my settings for the touch keyboard. I keep my system up to date all the time and I tried to reinstall the drivers and firmware with your link, but the problem still persists. Any further solution?

    Hello BingweiZhang,

Thank you so much for posting in Microsoft Community.

I appreciate you raising this concern to us, and I understand that you're having issues with your on-screen keyboard won't pop-up. You got me here; we'll definitely isolate this issue together.

To be able to solve this issue, please try these steps:

    1. Go to Settings > Devices > Typing.
    2. Under the Touch keyboard section, make sure that the "Automatically show the touch keyboard in windowed apps when there's no keyboard attached to your device" option is turned on.
    3. If the option is already turned on, try turning it off and then turning it back on again.
    4. Restart your Surface Book 3 and check if the issue is resolved.

If any case the issue persist to happen, you may also refer to the steps below:

    1. Check for Updates. Go to Settings >> Windows Update >> Install available updates >> restart to apply changes.
    2. Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Apps
    3. Download Drivers and Firmware: Download Surface Book 3 Drivers and Firmware. from Official Microsoft Download Center

See this link to Get to know the touch keyboard - Microsoft Support

Please let me know if this works. Hopefully it helps!

    Best regards,

    Rolando S.
