My screen and browser(s) freeze and crash when trying to share my screen in Google Meet

I recently purchased a Surface Laptop (Surface_Laptop_7th_Edition_2037 with Snapdragon processor). I use it as my work computer and my company uses Google Suite for most of our work processes, so most of our call are in Google Meet.

I have no problem joining Google Meet calls by video and generally my audio is fine, but when I try to share my screen, my browser completely freezes which either freezes me in the meeting (video and audio) or kicks me out completely. I've tried by Edge and Chrome and have the same problem in both browsers.

When I use my old computer, there are no issues so it's not an internet problem.

I'm wondering if anyone else has run into a similar issue or any potential fixes.

    Hi heel2010,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with Google Meet on your Surface Laptop 7th Edition with a Snapdragon processor. Screen sharing should generally work smoothly, so here are some potential fixes to help resolve the freezing and crashing issue:

    • Check for Windows and Surface Updates
    1. Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any updates.
    2. Check for updates using the Surface App (if installed) to ensure your device has the latest firmware updates from Microsoft.
    • Disable Hardware Acceleration

Hardware acceleration can sometimes cause issues when screen sharing in browsers. Try disabling it in both Edge and Chrome.

    • Clear Browser Cache and Cookies: edge://settings/content/cookies

Disclaimer: Your browser automatically saves temporary internet files to help pages load faster. Clearing this cache will sometimes fix website issues. Please back up all your personal files first, such as Favorites, to ensure you do not lose data.

    • Disable Extensions

Browser extensions can sometimes interfere with Google Meet. Disable any extensions, especially those related to video conferencing or screen sharing, and try again.

    • Use Google Meet App

If the web version continues to give you issues, consider downloading the Google Meet app from the Microsoft Store (if available) and see if it provides a more stable experience.

If none of these solutions work, there may be compatibility issues with Google Meet and the Snapdragon processor or display handling on your Surface Laptop. In that case, contacting Google Meet support for more in-depth troubleshooting could be helpful.

    Your Sincerely

    Thanks, Hahn.

It looks like turning off hardware acceleration may have helped for now. Appreciate the help.
