Why is my Microsoft Surface Pro 7's touchpad on the keyboard only working sometimes? I bought a brand new keyboard because I thought my old one was the issue, but this one does the same thing.

A couple weeks ago I noticed that my touchpad on the Microsoft Surface Pro 7's keyboard would work about half of the time, but then would randomly not respond to my touch, so I'd have to use a bluetooth mouse or the touch screen to get around it. It shifts between not working and working, both about half of the time. I bought a new keyboard because I thought the issue was in my old one, but I just started using it and the same thing is going on with this one. I've tried restarting.

My experience is that this problem exists withe the 7+ and 3/5. Some applications don't see strokes on the touch pad. Just a tiny part (left) of the touch pad registers. App's also include some MS supplied parts of windows, other parts or apps don't have this issue.

And the issue was present right from the beginning. I was very disappointed when buying my 7+ that it had the same issue as my 3/5 (don't recall the number)

I think it's an interface issue between windows and the app. There used to be a setting that reserves parts of the pad for movements like scrolling. Perhaps that is misinterpreted by windows or the app,

Very annoying when moving the cursor to a text part that needs modification.

I have given up since all suggestions I have seen and followed up don't solve this problem.

    Hello Miriam,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you're experiencing issues with your Surface Pro 7's touchpad on the keyboard. I am here to help and let us both isolate the problem.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the intermittent touchpad problem on your Microsoft Surface Pro 7:

    1. Check Touchpad Settings:
      • Open the Settings app.
      • Go to Devices > Touchpad.
      • Ensure that the touchpad settings are configured correctly. You can adjust sensitivity, scrolling, and other options here.
    2. Update or Reinstall Drivers:
      • Sometimes touchpad issues are caused by outdated or corrupted drivers.
      • Open Device Manager (you can search for it in the taskbar).
      • Look for the Surface Typecover Filter Device driver under Keyboards and any touchpad-related drivers under Human Interface Devices.
      • Right-click and choose Uninstall device for each of these drivers.
      • Restart your Surface Pro to allow Windows to reinstall the drivers automatically.
    3. Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit to identify and fix hardware issues. See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (microsoft.com).
    4. Force shutdown your device by holding the power button until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds).
    5. Manually update the drivers and firmware for your Surface:
      1. Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro.
      2. Then click the link next to Surface Pro 7 then click Download on the next page.
      3. Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.
      4. After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.
    6. Test in UEFI Screen: Boot your device to the UEFI screen (also known as BIOS). You can load the UEFI firmware settings menu through Windows. To do this:
      1. Select Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
      2. Next to Advanced startup, select Restart Now.
      3. Under Choose an option, select TroubleshootAdvanced OptionsUEFI Firmware Settings, and then select Restart.
      4. Test the touchpad there by selecting, highlighting, or moving the mouse.
      5. If the touchpad behaves normally in UEFI, it suggests a software issue rather than a hardware problem.

If none of the above step's work, you might need to perform a system reset. Keep in mind that this will restore your Surface Pro to factory settings, so make sure to back up your important data before proceeding. This can help to resolve any software issues that may be causing the touchpad to malfunction. To do this, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC. Choose either Keep my files or Remove everything, depending on your preference.

For more detailed instructions, see Troubleshoot Surface Type Cover or Keyboard - Microsoft Support.

Remember to back up your data before attempting any major changes. Hopefully, one of these steps will help resolve the touchpad issue.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia
