Microsoft Surface Earbuds case battery dead

Hi, I just bought a pair of second hand unused earbuds, literally never touched. They had been bought this winter and the warranty was already gone by then. The case is completely dead, nothing in it works if its not plugged in, it doesn't recognise the earbuds being put in, it doesn't charge the earbuds, the light doesn't go on.

I have tried doing several hardware resets but can't do a firmware reset since that requires the cable to be unplugged, and when it is well the button doesn't work since its dead. I can't send it in for repair since the warranty is out and it costs as much as buying a new pair which seems insane. Is there any way I can get a new case and just a new case that isn't dead?

    In this case, please see Charge Surface Earbuds (microsoft.com) for more info. But if the light still no longer comes on, it indicates a potential hardware problem. At this point, your earbuds need to be repaired or replaced.
