Microsoft surface book pen buttons work but pen tip will not write

I have a microsoft surface book (1st gen) and the pen does not work. Buttons work fine but the tip will not write. Heres what I have tried:

  1. Removing device from Bluetooth and then adding it back
  2. changing the battery
  3. I even bought a new pen thinking it may be the pen! New pen did not work.
  4. Removed device driver and reinstalled.
  5. System rollback
  6. Updated system driver

Surface pen integration gives me this --

Device HID{00001812-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb}_Dev_VID&02045e_PID&090e_REV&002f_c773e685e315&Col02\9&31d7fe58&0&0001 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

I am out of ideas. Someone help me. I haven't even had this computer for a month. I hate it, so many issues for such an expensive machine. The main selling point is this damn pen and it seems like a lot of people have this issue?

Also side note, computer randomly freezes every few hours, no ctrl+alt+del, nothing will unfreeze it and I have to do a cold reboot. Any ideas for this issue as well? I am mostly concerned with the pen right now, but hey while I'm on here if I can fix that issue too.

    Hello, Tjsem!

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your concerns with your Surface Pens that stopped working on your Surface Book. We are sorry to learn about this and we appreciate you letting us know so we can help you out.

You mentioned that you performed some troubleshooting steps and the issue is still present. Since the pen cap functions and inking is the only issue on your pens, may we know if you are able to zoom in and out using your fingers on to your screen? We need to know if it has something to do with the multi-touch feature preventing your pen to write.

In the meantime, check the steps below. You may have performed these steps, kindly complete them in the same exact order.

    • Verify that the pen's LED light is coming on by pressing and holding the pen cap for 3-7 seconds.

Once on, please do the next step.

If your pen still does not ink, please reinstall the drivers of the pen and touch.

    1. While the Surface Pen is paired on your Surface device, open Device Manager.
    2. Click View on top and check Show hiddendevices**
    3. Expand Human Interface DevicesHID-compliant pen > Uninstall device

Surface pen settings > Uninstall device

                                                                Surface pen****integration > Uninstall****device

HID-Compliant touch screen > Uninstall device(if you see 2 of these drivers, uninstall both)

                                                                Intel (R) Precise Touch DeviceUninstall****device

    1. Expand FirmwareSurface****touchUninstall****device
    2. Expand System****devicesSurfacepenpairingUninstall****device

                                                SurfaceTouchServicing****ML > Uninstall****device

Note: If prompted with a checkbox stating "Delete the driver software for this device", leave it unchecked then hit Uninstall. Do this for all drivers asked to uninstall

    1. Restart
    2. After Restart, check in Setting****sDevices, if the Surface Pen is still paired on the device. If it is still paired, remove and add the Surface Pen again.
    3. Test the Surface Pen

We hope this helps you out. Otherwise, don't hesitate to update us so we can further assist you.

    Regards,

    Janette_Z

I had a hell of a time trying to figure this out due to websites populating the internet with general help tips. But finally found the Microsoft link to the answer. Go to Microsoft Store and search for "Surface Diagnostics Toolkit" I uninstalled drivers, reinstalled drivers. Disconnect from Bluetooth, reconnected to Bluetooth, changed the batteries, uninstalled display drivers, reinstalled display drivers, uninstalled surface touch and pen drivers, reinstalled them. This toolkit fixed my problem. I would suggest trying this first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
