Surface Pro 3 type cover not connecting

Surface pro 3. Type cover just stopped working few weeks back. I did everything including a full reset, got new type cover, upgraded to win10 pro (from win8 pro), did driver diagnosis, installed firmware. Still nothing but only HID keyboard shows up under device and type cover not connecting - neither the new nor the old. Spent last two days troubleshooting in the middle of a major work deadline.

I am having the same problem with my Surface Pro 3, although I can still get the on screen keyboard to come up.   I have not upgraded to to win 10 pro, just the standard win 10 upgrade from win 8.1.

And no, none of the fixes posted have worked for me either.

Yes the problem started after an "automatic" upgrade.

Guess what, the last upgrade to my lap top also killed some functions on it that have been working for over 2 years.  For some reason, it seems that my previous restore points created when both devices worked, have disappeared.

I cannot afford to purchase new equipment every time microsoft upgrades cause my equipment to lose previously working functions.  These upgrades may be designed, in someone's mind, to improve my computer's functionality, but they seem to be playing havoc with way too many people for the failures to be just a coincidence.

At any rate, thanks for trying to help us all.

My surface has had the same problem for over a month now.

It started after a windows update.

I tried everything mentioned and nothing worked. The keyboard works on another Surface so the problem is with the device itself.

I tried reinstalling a fresh windows through the latest recovery image but that didn't work either.

I think the update has messed up the device.

    There are 2 things:

    1. The cover doesn't light up when you turn on the device.
    2. The "Surface cover" doesn't show up in device manager.

The windows update has messed up something with the device itself.

Hope Microsoft comes up with a fix!

No, I have not. I will try it out.

But as FarhanNaseer posted below - this is exactly what happened. It happened after an update. It will be ridiculous if an update messes up your device and there is no straight answer to it.

When I tried direct help, I was told my port hardware is broken. If you do a net search you will find hundreds of people have exactly the same problem. One fine day from nowhere keyboard stop working and does not show up under device manager right after an automatic update. How is that possible?

    Hi Janette_Z

The Surface Pro 3 does not use UEFI only standard BIOS - how do I  "Go to Devices as well and check Type Cover port, see if it is enabled or not" in the BIOS I don't see it there.

These Surface models use the new firmware UEFI interface:

    • Surface Pro 4, Surface Pro (5th Gen), Surface Pro 6, Surface Pro 7, Surface Pro X
    • Surface Laptop (1st Gen), Surface Laptop 2, Surface Laptop 3
    • Surface Studio (1st Gen), Surface Studio 2
    • Surface Book, Surface Book 2, Surface Book 3
    • Surface Go, Surface Go 2

For Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2,aSurfce Pro 3, and Surface 3, we continue to support standard BIOS.

    Hi Janette,

    Thanks for responding.

Did every step you mentioned. Didn't work.

Touchpad or key neither is working, under any situation. USB drive working.

Under devices (Bluetooth and other devices), or under device manager, Type cover port does not show up.
