    Hi patrickrogan

It seems that you are unable to access Windows Defender on your tablet, even though it is still updating, and you can access the update history. When you hover over the hidden icons, you see the Defender icon with a yellow exclamation mark and a message that says, “attention recommended”. You mentioned that you are denied access to Windows Defender when you try to open it from the Windows Security app.

    1. This issue could be caused by a conflict with a third-party antivirus software, such as Trend Micro, which you mentioned you had installed previously.
    2. You could try disabling and removing the third-party antivirus software and then check if you can access Windows Defender.
    3. If that doesn’t work, you could try running the Windows Defender troubleshooter to automatically diagnose and repair any issues with Windows Defender.

If the issue persists and despite of all the troubleshooting we have tried, it would be more beneficial for you to reach out our assisted support team so they can further check your device remotely. You may reach them by following the instructions below.

Well, I found the problem. When I open the windows security app and go to the setting and try to open windows defender it tells me I don't have access to it. The tablet stills does defender updates and I can access update history. When I hover over hidden icons, I have the defender icon with a yellow exclamation mark and says attention recommended. but it will not open. any ideas.

    thanks

    patrick

    Hi patrickrogan,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with your Surface Pro 7. Based on your description, it seems that the “Virus and Threat Scan” option is missing from Windows Defender. This could be due to a number of reasons, such as a recent update or a third-party antivirus software interfering with Windows Defender

    • Just to verify, are you using Windows 10 or Windows 11 on your Surface Pro7?
    • May I know when this issue started?
    • Did you find any error message?

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Make sure that your device is up to date. Update Windows - Microsoft Support
    2. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Go to settings>System>troubleshoot>other troubleshooters>click run on Windows update.
    3. Restart the Windows Security app. Close the app and reopen it.
    4. Check if the Windows Defender Antivirus service is running.
    • Open the Run prompt by pressing the Windows key + R.
    • Type “services.msc” and press Enter.
    • Locate the “Windows Defender Security Center Service” and right-click on it.
    • Select “Restart” from the context menu.
    • Try running a scan using the Windows Defender Security Center. Open the app and click on "Virus & threat protection". Click on "Scan options" and select the type of scan you want to run.

Please let me know how it goes and hopefully it helps.

    Kind regards,

    Christopher.
