Surface Pro 6 charger blinking or flashing

Hi, I plugged in my Surface Pro 6 today and it won't charge. Just the LED in the tip blinking randomly.

I verified that the power supply works fine by plugging it into my older Surface Pro 2017 and it works as usual, solid LED.

What should I do? This SP6 is not plugged into any USB device, microSD, and/or Type Cover. The power supply is genuine from the purchase.

Hi all, thank you for responding to this thread.

I had my SP6 healthy again, after taking it to a local Surface expert. Since I live in Indonesia where there are no Microsoft service centers.

It was the charging port, and not the battery, or the charger. I have no idea how it broke, but one thing I notice now that the port is new, is the magnet is stronger.

previously the magnet would rattle everytime the charger is brought near. But now it snaps stronger and no rattle/clicking.

    Hi AlvinTanto,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community.

How about plugging in the power supply of your Surface Pro 2017 to the Surface Pro 6? Does it work or also blinking?

Try to change the orientation of the connector that is connected to the Surface and also check the power supply for any loose connection or damage.

If still the issue persist, please Contact Support you could check for replacement options available.

So I've look at this again and the freezer pack routine was a red herring. Sorry about that.

In reality there is a small break in the cable from the charger to the Surface. A slight movement of the cable can connect or disconnect it. All the faffing about with the freezer pack was just moving the cable around. The only fix is a new charger. Or I could take the thing apart, repair the cable and reassemble. This may not even be possible; I'm not sure I have the nerve to try.

I can only hope Microsoft will supply new chargers for the Surface Pro 4.

    Richard

I have the blinking LED, Surface not charging, problem though not identical to yours; I don't have anything else to connect it to so I can't say it works OK with something else.

However, while I've had the problem in recent days after a period of use, today it started blinking the moment I plugged it in. The charger usually gets quite hot and today is our hottest day of the year so far, so today I wrapped a freezer pack round it. When I plugged it in it begin working at once - it's still working now.

My guess: some component in the overheat protection circuit has degraded and now triggers at lower temperatures. (Maybe your charger cooled down while you dug out the old surface?)

I've bought a replacement charger, after all, you can't carry a freezer pack around with you, but the old charger should still work in cooler weather (assuming I guessed right). This might get someone out of a jam; I hope so.

    Hi Marrion,

    thank your for the reply.

Unfortunately I have lost the older charger, the one from the Pro 6 is the only one I have.

I've tried both orientations of the connector. One orientation blinks, the other is off, no blinks or solid light. Sometimes both blinks and sometimes both off. If I replug it in seconds, it doesn't blink at all in both orientation. Only blinks when I waited around a minute to replug. In all cases, no charging was indicated from the battery status. Currently at 40%.

Tried plugging after Shut Down, Sleep, Restart, and Turned On. Same outcome.

I bought the Pro 6 in Canada, currently in Indonesia. I have no problem buying a new genuine power supply, but I don't think that's the problem. Since it works fine on my Pro 2017.

Windows 10 is all updated to the current recommendation of the updater.

Is it possible the port caught some debris? I looked into it with a flashlight, it does have normal amount of lints, like everything does when you shine a light on anything. My Pro 2017 port was even dirtier but its works fine.

I do notice that the three spring contacts on all ends of the port are a bit more depressed than the ones in the middle. Seems rational since those threes match the contacts on the charger, is that normal though?
