    Hi vania villanueva,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Surface support. Based on your description, you are trying to connect an external monitor to the Surface Laptop (1stgen) through HDMI connection.

The Surface Laptop (1st Gen) does not have an HDMI port built-in. Instead, it has Mini DisplayPort port available for external monitors. You can still connect an external display to your Surface Laptop using a compatible adapter or cable. To connect an external display to your Surface Laptop (1st Gen), you will need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter or cable. You can purchase this adapter or cable from the Microsoft Store or any authorized Microsoft reseller.

Here are the steps to connect your Surface Laptop (1st Gen) to an external display:

    1. Connect one end of the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter or cable to the Mini DisplayPort on your Surface Laptop.
    2. Connect the other end of the adapter or cable to the HDMI port on your external display.
    3. Turn on your external display and select the HDMI input.
    4. Your Surface Laptop should automatically detect the external display and configure the display settings.

If your external display is not detected, you can manually configure the display settings by following these steps:

    1. Right-click on the desktop and select "Display settings."
    2. Under "Multiple displays," select "Extend desktop."
    3. Select the external display from the list of available displays.
    4. Configure the display settings as desired.

See this page for more details in connecting Surface to an external monitor: Troubleshoot connecting Surface to an external display - Microsoft Support

    I hope this helps!

    Kind regards,
    Marrion
