Issue with USB Keyboard While Charging Surface Book 3

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue with my Surface Book 3. When running on battery, my USB-connected keyboard works perfectly. However, when I plug in the charger (using the Surface port), the USB port starts acting up. It seems like the keyboard tries to connect repeatedly, works for a few seconds, and then stops functioning entirely.

As soon as I unplug the charger, the keyboard starts working normally again.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I really need to use my keyboard while my device is charging.

Pablo

    Hello, Pablo MAE.

    Welcome to Microsoft Community!

It has come to my attention that your Surface Book 3's USB keyboard is not functioning properly when plugged into a power source. I will assist you in investigating this issue and share some possible recommendations with you.

There are three main reasons why this issue occurs:

    1. Surface Book 3 driver failure
    2. keyboard connection issues
    3. Surface Book 3 hardware issues

First of all, you can try to manually get the driver and firmware installation package for Surface Book 3 to troubleshoot potential driver issues and maintain device performance:

Download Surface Book 3 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center ****

Please reboot your device after the download is complete to apply the driver updates.

You can observe how the keyboard works when it is connected to a power source or test it with another keyboard. This helps us determine where the hardware problem lies.

If all USB keyboards do not function properly when connected to power, we were able to determine that this is a hardware issue originating from the Surface Book 3.

As I am not in a position to directly assist you in debugging your device, I recommend you to contact the Surface Technical Support team for more efficient hardware service.

I share with you the steps to create a service order here:

Open the Surface App (usually built into your Surface device, or you can download it from the Microsoft Store if you don't have one) and follow the procedure below:

    1. Click "Help and Support" and then click "Get Help".
    2. Briefly describe your problem in the text box, such as "USB keyboard does not work when power is connected", and then press Enter.
    3. Click "Contact Support" at the bottom.
    4. Select "Technical Support" and click "Confirm".
    5. You will see "Chat support" and "phone support" options, please contact them during working hours, you will get one-to-one support services.

I wish you all the best.

    Best Regards.
