What is the best and fastest External Hard Drive that can be used for external storage of photographs with my MS Surface Pro 9 with I7 and 32GB of RAM? Since the ports are USB 3.2 Gen 1 is there no point in purchasing a SSD that utilizes the USB 3.2 Gen 2 increase read and write speed or a Thunderbolt 4 SSD?

    Hello, Daniel Lutz1.

    Welcome to Microsoft Community!

For MS Surface Pro 9 with i7 and 32GB of RAM, it is important to choose the right external hard drive to store your photos. Since your device is equipped with a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, allow me to share the following with you:

The device has a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, then it really won't theoretically be able to utilize the full potential of an external drive with USB 3.2 Gen 2. The Gen 1 port will have some limitations in terms of transfer speeds.

As such, it may not make much sense to purchase one of these higher specification SSDs unless you plan on upgrading to a device that supports these interfaces in the future.

Overall, you can choose the right SSD for your needs. For the Surface Pro 9, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 specification SSD would be a more suitable and affordable option.

These are some of the ideas that the Microsoft community can share with you.

Thank you for using and supporting Surface products.

    Best Regards.
