Surface Laptop 3 Battery draining super fast overnight

Recently (I'm guessing after a system upgrade of some kind) my Surface Laptop 3 will lose all charge overnight even though it was on sleep and had full charge when I put it on sleep. This never happened before and is now happening regularly. Below is a screenshot of my configuration.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose and fix this issue?

    Hi,

The problem is that the computer doesn't actually go to sleep - the screen goes black but the computer is actually still on, which drains the battery, plus it gets hot, and then the fan runs to cool it which also drains the battery.

Do you use an external monitor?

I have the same problem and have spent hours on the phone and online with Microsoft support. After months dealing with the support staff they informed me that if you have an intel processor and use an external monitor there is a bug in their software that leads to a bunch of problems (including this), that all start when you unplug the external monitor.

I have the most expensive warranty available and they have done absolutely nothing to help (other than spend hours trying to trouble shoot, which mainly involves factory resetting the device and doesn't solve the problem).

I asked for a refund given that this problem is their fault (software and hardware), and I was offered a replacement device instead. I took the replacement (which they only send to you after they receive your device in the mail, meaning I was without a computer for a week), and obviously the problem persisted since the replacement also had an intel processor.

If your problem is the same as mine, Microsoft's advice was to wait until their engineers push through a patch in an update, but there was no timeline on when that update would happen. In my opinion this is completely unacceptable so I am still trying to get either a replacement with a non-intel processor or a refund.

This also happened to me within the last couple of days!

I updated my laptop approximately 4-5 days ago, and now every morning when I try to turn on my laptop, its completely drained and I have to charge it to turn it on, even though I shut down my laptop the night before on full charge.

Its definitely quiet annoying as this laptop is quite new (less than a year old) and it is already ruining! Hopefully it's just due to an upgrade and can be fixed soon as I use my laptop for university so i need the battery to work.

Its less stressful seeing other people have the same issue, however, that means Microsoft definitely needs to fix this!

hi i tried all the steps except for the recovery and none of them worked.  is there anything else i can try before the recovery option?  how long does the recovery step take?

I have the same issue these days. I would say never do recovery. I am so frustrated that they recommend recovery for every problem. Recovery will not solve the problem but waste your time. Keep your power connected if possible. Perhaps they will fix it someday without telling us.

I have the same issue with my Surface Pro 7, which is 1 month old. I ran a SleepStudy report, and the problem seems to be the intel(r) smart sound technology (intel(r) sst) audio controller, which is 100% active during sleep times...

I have tried to search for a fix to the solution but couldn't find anything.

Has anyone found a solution to the problem?

This also started happening to me at roughly the same time on my Surface Laptop 3, about midway through last month. I'd close the lid on my laptop and come back a few hours later (or the next morning) and it would have 0% charge left, and would often be slightly warm.

Battery reports showed it going from a full charge and suddenly dropping to 0% when powered on again. I factory reset my device as suggested by support but the problem has still been occurring. I've run every troubleshooter I could find, and the Surface diagnostic tool too. Hopefully it was a firmware update that broke something, I'm hoping it will fix itself eventually!
