Mouse drag and click are unreliable

Forgive me for putting this issue in the wrong category. There is no category for issues with peripherals or drivers for peripherals.

It feels like this has been a progressive issue on my Surface Laptop Studio (gen. 1). It started with sporadically unreliable drag, and now the failures are more often than the successes when trying to perform a tasks with a mouse. All mice connected to my laptop, be it bluetooth or USB, behave unreliably. It might be good to tell that the touchpad still behaves without issues. But I have reached a point where using my mouse is more unpredictable than rolling dice. It is really getting under my skin. Even the simplest of tasks like clicking and dragging turn into a nightmare to accomplish, even doing more harm than good.

So what happens?

  • A click is sometimes interpreted as double click or even a triple click, with all of the consequences.
    • In a text editor or web browser: instead of placing the cursor, a word, sentence or entire paragraph is highlighted
    • Some toggle actions, like check boxes or a media play/pause button, toggles on and off again. So pressing "pause" immediately triggers "play" again, and checkboxes toggle on and then immediately off again.
    • In the Explorer, a file or folder is opened instead of higlighted
  • A double-click is sometimes interpreted as a triple click.
  • Left mouse button down + drag is sometimes interrupted. This is visible when highlighting text:
    • sometimes I lose chunks of text that I am highlighting, starting a new highlight randomly,
    • sometimes highlighting stops, and my mice start dragging the text that has been highlighted so far,
    • sometimes when I successfully highlighted the portion of text I wanted to highlight, I lose the entire highlight

What did I try?

I found a thread related to my problem: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/erratic-mouse-movement/a5ce535b-7c7b-433a-8432-5d3210b9ffd5. However, the suggested actions do not resolve my issue.

  1. I installed the latest updates from Windows Update. Then I rebooted. No effect.
  2. Through msconfig, I disabled all non-Microsoft services and did a clean reboot. No effect.
  3. I unchecked the Enhance pointer precision box to turn off Mouse Acceleration. No effect.
  4. In the touchpad settings, I unchecked "keep touch pad activated when a mouse is connected". No effect.
  5. I uninstalled any installed mice in Device Manager and rebooted. No effect.
  6. I connected the USB mouse through a different docking station. No effect.
  7. I cleaned my touch screen and touch pad with a dry microfibre cloth. No effect.
  8. I checked my USB ports. They do not contain dust or dirt.

Some samples

Here are some screen captures of what is happening.

#1: While dragging with the left mouse button pressed, highlighting text is halted and the currently-highlighted text is dragged.

#2: While dragging with the left mouse button pressed, highlighting the text is cancelled, and a new highlight is started.

What's next?

What can I do to get my mice to function normally again like they used to and like they should? :(

Here to report back on my troubleshooting. My interim conclusion is: I have been using faulty mice. Here's what I've tried:

    1. Surface Diagnostics Kit didn't result in surfacing or resolving the issue.
    2. Uninstalling the mice and rebooting did not resolve the issue.

Then I experienced a moment of reflection: this only happens with one of my setups (in the office, but not at home). So I proceeded to check the following:

    1. The mouse being connected to the USB hub in my monitor.
    2. The cable connecting my laptop to the USB hub in my monitor.

Before checking more parameters, I learned the following:

    1. Connecting my "work mouse" through the USB hub with my "home USB hub cable" still gave me this issue.
    2. Connecting my "home mouse" through the USB hub with my "home USB hub cable" did not give me this issue.
    3. Connecting my "home mouse" through the USB hub with my "work USB hub cable" did not give me this issue.

I will keep an eye on my issue the coming days. My guess would be, if the issue doesn't come back in a workday or two, my interim conclusion of faulty mice will be definitive.

    Hi Hahn W.,

Thank you for the suggestions. Apologies for the delay in response. I will try these steps when have the time.

It might take a while, since some of the steps require me to perform a new backup of my files.

    Kind regards,

    Jeroen

    Hi Rood_824_office,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

Given the comprehensive steps you've already taken, it's clear that this issue is quite persistent. Here are some additional steps and considerations to further diagnose and possibly resolve the erratic mouse behavior on your Surface Laptop Studio:

If the problem does not exist under the new account, the problem may be related to your previous user profile. In this case, you can try to repair or reset the profile of your existing user account, or continue using a newly created account.

    • Reset using the most appropriate choice. If you've tried basic troubleshooting options, you may need to restore or reset your Surface. If the issue occurs after a reset, then the root cause is very likely hardware related. Restore or reset Surface for Windows - Microsoft Support

By following these steps, you should be able to further diagnose and possibly resolve the erratic mouse behavior on your Surface Laptop Studio. If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely
