Phantom touches to the touch screen

Hello!

I have recently started having the problem with phantom/ ghost touches on my Surface Book. At that point, my computer almost becomes unusable, the track pad does not work etc. It goes away if I switch my screen off and then switch it on again.

The phantom touches are usually only in a single row and around the same area of the screen. Any ideas on how to make it stop? I've attached an image of how it appeared multiple times.

Thanks

Regards

Amit

Jannette_Z - thank for the suggestions - unfortunately this did not work - I believe Microsoft has a software bug - this is happening on my Surface Book - exactly as it is happening for Amit - and it occurred just in last couple months - after some of the major Microsoft Windows updates.

I am a bit disappointed.   I bought a Microsoft Laptop with a view of "at least their software will always work with theri hardware".

Having to keep my Touchscreen disabled is very frustrating.

    Hi, Amit1984!

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your concerns. We are sorry to learn about the Surface Book that has phantom touches on the screen. Thanks for taking the time to let us know about this and allowing us to help you out. Let's perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. I believe you've restarted the device, kindly:

    ·         Check for Windows Update:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates

Please restart your device to apply the updates.

    ·         Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and make sure to complete the tasks.

    ·         Force shutdown the device and restart.

1.) Press and hold the power button until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release the power button.

2.) Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

If that doesn't work, use this two-button shutdown process to make sure your Surface turns off completely:

1.) Press and hold the power button on your Surface until the screen turns off (about 30 seconds), then release it.

2.) Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time until the screen turns off (about 15 seconds), then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.

3.) After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.

4.) Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

    1. Select Start >Settings> Update & security > Recovery.
    2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart Now.
    3. Under Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings, and then select Restart.
    4. If phantom touches are present, this is a hardware issue already and it needs to be sent in for replacement. If not, please do the next step.
    • Uninstall HID-Compliant Touch Screen driver and restart.

    1. Open Device Manager.

    1. Go to Human Interface Devices.
    2. Expand Human Interface Devices, and Right-click HID-Compliant Touch Screen.
    3. Right-click on HID-Compliant Touch Screen and select Uninstall. If there is more than one driver, uninstall those as well.
    4. Restart the Surface and attempt to reproduce the issue.

We hope this helps. Otherwise, don't hesitate to respond to this thread if there’s anything else that needs to be addressed.

    Kind regards,

    Janette_Z

    Thanks for the information Janette

I believe its a 'touch' issue for me.

    1. The issue continued on Surface UEFI
    2. I then uninstalled the HID-Compliant Touch Screen drivers
    3. Issue stopped as soon as I uninstalled it. And obviously the touch screen stopped working.
    4. Restarted the computer. The issue started again (as the touch screen drivers got reinstalled).
    5. I once again uninstalled the Touch Screen drivers. And the issue stopped.

I am now using my device without the touch screen layer.

    Regards

    Amit

Thanks Janette_Z.   That last solution worked for me, after I found it on youtube. It didn't seem immediately obvious, but I shut down and restarted the next morning and miracle of miracles, it was resolved!  This, after tech support for Surface Pro did not understand, nor was able to resolve the issue, and was essentially encouraging me to buy a new device.

I started experiencing this after thr 2004 update.

Tried the solutions, contacted support and a driver update fixed the issue for a moment.

However the definite solution came when I disabled Windows Hello, face recognition. Tried to remember when the problem first showed up and the most recent change was the replacement of password by face recognition.

The phantom touches were all in the upper area, like the first line of my Surface Pro 4.

I don't know if this is the case of your issue, but maybe this will help.
