Surface Pro 7 does not connect to ethernet using USB-C adapter

I  have a new Surface Pro 7 with all the latest updates installed. Wifi connection is working fine.

When I tried to connect to my wired network using a USB-C to ethernet adapter, it works fine the first time I make the connection, but whenever I reconnect I get continuing error messages stating the the "USB device Caused a malfunction" and "Windows no longer recognises this device".

Of course I tried different adapters (2 x StarTech, 1 x Belkin and 1 x UNI). The latter was suggested by Microsoft Support as an approved and tested device. All of them gave the same error.  Using a USB 3.0 to ethernet adapter on the normal USB port works fine.

Microsoft support does not seem to know the answer. I guess there is something wrong with the USB-C driver. Anyone having the same problem or may be a solution?

    Hi Crest

No, I do not have (access to) a second Surface Pro 7. So I can not test this. Maybe MS can test this.

I already uploaded the question with the Feedback hub as Barb suggested.

However, looking at the post in this feedback hub (huge frustrati****y.

    Hi Barb,

    Thanks for this information.

However, I am not sure if this will work (and it is very expensive). The last adapter I bought (the UNI) was also recommended by Microsoft Support as being compatible with the Surface Pro 7. It was not.

Also, I agree that any adapter should work. That is why we have standards for USB-C.

    Hi Barb,

    Thank you for your reply.

I also think there is a problem with the driver. Disconnecting the adapter does not work properly.

I have submitted pictures of the adapters in response to Crest's reply.

    Regards

    Roger

Please use the Feedback Hub App to file a problem report and provide the details

of the USB-C to Ethernet adapters you used. I am guessing it is a bug.

    Hi {rvelden},

Thank you for reaching out Microsoft Community.  We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you.

Based on my research, the USB-C to Ethernet adapter that works perfect is the one labeled as USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet adapter.  Is this the one you're using? Would you mind attaching the photos of the USB-C to Ethernet adapters you were using that gave you the same error? This is for me to double-check if those adapters can sustain the network connection between your Surface Pro 7 and the internet connection.

Please don't hesitate to respond to this thread whenever you're available so I can further assist you.

    Kind Regards,

    Crest_Z
