New Type Cover - Older Surface Pro 3

I have an older surface pro 3 (circa 2014) that used to have a 1644 type cover. That type cover broke. I have a new 1725 type cover and I can't seem to get it to work with the surface pro 3. All the updates are current but I don't know if the firmware updates are. I thought those were automatic as well.

My SP3 will immediately recognize the type cover from my wife's SP3 (also a 1644 type cover). When I attach the 1725 type cover, I get nothing. None of the keys work, no backlighting, no mouse movement with the track pad. No keyboard shows up in the 'Devices & Printers' window. 'Surface Type Cover Filter Device' is greyed out in device manager.

Does anyone know how to get this combo to work?

Thanks.

    John,

I've done pretty much everything in all the threads that I can find on this topic and nothing has worked. To your specific reply:

    1) Surface Diagnostic Toolkit ran all the way through and showed that everything was fine. It never ran any kind of test on the keyboard or touch pad. Maybe because the SP3 isn't detecting one.

    1. My OS Build is 19042.868 - Windows 10 Pro - version 20H2.  When I check the downloads page, there is nothing available with 19042 in the name. I can't match my OS Build.
    2. It's my understanding that the SP3 doesn't come up in UEFI but comes up in the MegaTrends BIOS instead. Either way, the keys and cursor are unresponsive. Only the touchscreen works.

It simply does not recognize the newer model type cover but will always recognize the older one. It's not possible to do any type of update to the type cover through sound/printers since it doesn't show up in there. In device manager, all the type cover device types are hidden since the SP3 didn't detect a type cover. If I force showing the hidden items, I can uninstall and update them; but the SP3 still won't recognize the new type cover on reboot or scan for changes. And yes, the new type cover works on newer Surface Pro units like a 6 and 7.

    Rick.

Thank you for confirming, rqueneau. May we confirm where did you purchase the new Type cover?

Thank you for confirming, rqueneau. UEFI applies for devices that runs Windows 10. Please try the steps above and boot the device to UEFI and check if the issue would persists.

    Hi rqueneau,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry.

We suggest the methods below to troubleshoot:

    • Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.
    • Download and install the driver's package. Check the specific OS build of your Windows SettingsSystemAboutDownload the driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro 3 and click download on the next page. Please choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next. After the download, runand installthe .msi then Restart the Surface Device.

    - Force the device to shut down and restart. Turn off the device > Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds, and then release both. If the device boots to the UEFI settings, verify if the keyboard works on the UEFI.

Keep us updated by replying on this thread.
