Extreme Lag on Windows Surface Pro 9

Recently I have had extreme slowness and lag on my Surface Pro, and I have tried restarting and shutting down many times, but every time I turn it on again it lags. This did not start happening until a few days ago, and before then has been running fine. I checked my Windows Security, and it said that I had some sort of adware called "PUA:Win32/OfferCore" and when I tried to click remove, it didn't work. I am wondering if this is the source of my lag, but it said that I have had this for nearly two years. I have deleted what Windows Security says is the affected item, but it has not gone away, and I still have major lag. I have tried turning on "hidden items" and then searching for "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scans\History\Service" but it repeatedly says that the folder is empty. I am not sure what to do, as everything I try does not work. If anyone has similar problems, or has an answer to my problem, some sort of guidance would be appreciated, but I don't have my hopes up as I cannot find my problem anywhere on the internet.

Hi Marrion and Maxwell (or is it Jack? You are one of those lucky people with a first name for both first and surnames :))

I have been experiencing a very similar, if not the same, problem. An example would be when I am typing an email in Gmail. The cursor will stop blinking, no characters will appear, then after a couple of seconds, the cursor comes back and all the characters I had typed ripple out. It is not exclusively in Gmail that the problem is seen, but this just happens to be the last thing I have used this morning that exhibited this behaviour.

I do not wish to seem mean, but the advice given, and this is not directed at you, Marrion, as I have seen this on many 'solution' posts, seems woeful

You say the below in response to Maxwell's problem:

    1. Run a full virus scan or an offline scan using Windows Security.
    2. Try disabling any unnecessary startup programs or services that may be running in the background and causing the lag. You can do this by opening the Task Manager (press Ctrl + Shift + Esc), clicking on the "Startup" tab, and disabling any programs that you don't need to run at startup.
    3. Clear your browser cache and history, as this can sometimes cause performance issues.
    4. Check for any available updates for your Surface Pro, as these can often include performance improvements and bug fixes. Try also to check the Surface drivers' health through the Surface app and run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit to run some system checks and repairs. See this page for reference: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface app and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Support

Of the above, the ones that I find particularly egregious are 2 & 3. The idea that after purchasing a piece of kit that is over £1,000, that is the latest and greatest and yet it cannot handle '...unnecessary startup programs or services...' is galling! Why, with the simple expectation that this should be able to deal with simple 'office' type activities, is it necessary, as the user, to take any steps to rectify the sort of situation as described?

As for 1 & 4, I find it hard to imagine any generation of computing kit, let alone the very latest, does not do what is being described, automatically?

All that said, the issue of 'lagging' still exists on my surface pro 9. What are some of the other solutions, please?

    Many thanks

Have the same Problem on my Surface 9 Pro (12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1235U 2.50 GHz).

Every Time I close the Surface with the Keyboard, or push the power button -> the FPS drops to 10-15FPS

CTRL+SHIFT+WIN+B Shortcut does reset it, and i have the full 120Hz again.

Seems like a firmware bug after sleep.

I managed to fix the problem before you replied, but I appreciate the effort. I'm still not sure what fixed it, because I tried a multitude of things, but in the end, I held the off button for 30 seconds, and this may sound like a fairly simple and obvious thing to do, but I was stressed out as I had exams the week after and I needed my computer for study, which was extremely difficult when it took ten seconds to type a single letter.

    Again, thanks for the effort.

Have the exact same problem too. Also fixed with CTRL+SHIFT+WIN+B, although while the frames come back typing and clicking buttons still take a while for the computer to process.

    Hi MAXWELL Jack,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your Surface Pro. It's possible that the adware you mentioned could be causing the lag, but there could also be other factors at play. Here are a few steps you can take to try and resolve the issue:

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may want to consider doing a reset on the device. See this page for details on reset options for your Surface: Restore or reset Surface for Windows - Microsoft Support

Let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,
    Marrion
