Regarding trying a short boom mic that plugs into the headphone jack... I tried one (https://amzn.to/2YGsfrD) and as I suspected, it disables Bluetooth completely when something is plugged in there. It's expecting to use analog audio for input and output at that point, so plugging in just the analog mic in that jack is not a workaround.
Surface Headphones - Background noise too loud on calls
I have the same issue as this (oddly "locked" post):
Not sure why that post is locked as it's definitely not solved. Most of the things about these headphones I love, but the ambient noise that callers hear is unacceptable. Microsoft should have provided an option to use a boom mic. My old Corsair 2100 wireless headphones have a boom mic so it mostly picks up my voice, not other ambient noise.
Now I know we can connect an analog audio cable to the headphones. Has anyone tried connecting a headset boom mic to that port? I'm assuming that will shut off the Bluetooth capability though and all you'll have is a microphone with nothing connected to the computer. An example of such a universal boom mic:
The other option I guess is maybe use a separate wired microphone but that defeats the purpose of a wireless headset.

2019-12-10T22:49:15+00:00 I will try turning down the mic volume. Problem is, my voice isn't too loud for people on the other end of the call. It's that the mic is picking up all other surrounding noises. This is common when you don't have a boom mic that is meant for only near-field sounds. Being that the mic is way back on the right earphone it's picking up all other noises around the office.
So we'll test this, but being that I'm turning down the mic input volume overall that means my voice will also be quieter on the call, not just all other surrounding noises, continuing to make it equally difficult for someone to hear me clearly just now at an overall lower level.

2019-12-10T00:09:34+00:00 Hi LowellP,
Thank you for your waiting for a feedback on this concern.
For the loud background noise:
In addition to first ensuring the headphones are configured and set up correctly as detailed in the other post, then you might want to see if tuning the Levels of the Recording device might help alleviate some of the sensitivity of the microphone. To do this, please go to Windows Settings > System > Sound > select Sound Control Panel on the right side. Select the Recording tab, select the mic you want and select Properties. Be sure to select Surface Headphones as default then select the Level tab and tune down the slider.
For the headset boom mic:
For the headset boom mic on this link, as a third party product we could not confirm if it will work. If anyone else on this group has experience, please feel to chime in. Otherwise, we suggest you inquire to it Manufacturer if the product is compatible with Surface Headphones since they only listed Sony and Beats.
