Static/Buzz Noise from laptop speakers. Still consists with headphones plugged in.

Hi,

I've been having a really strange audio issue on my laptop. It's a Microsoft Surface Laptop 4. This laptop is only 3 months old. I brought it very recently.

My laptop specs are as follows

Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 Microsoft Surface (R) Edition 2.20 GHz

Operating system: Microsoft Windows 11 (64-bit)

Initially, a static/buzz noise would occur from only my left speaker whenever sound was playing. This also included notifications. And this static noise would linger about 5 seconds after the sound/notification stopped. If I plugged in my headphones using the headphones jack or if I used Bluetooth headphones then the static/buzz noise would stop. This issue only effected the laptop speakers. I've tried multiple things to fix this.

  • I ran the audio troubleshooter and my laptop found no issues
  • I looked at my audio driver in an attempt to update it but my laptop says there are no updates for it.
  • Looking at the control panel -> sound I looked into the properties of my laptop speakers and under the advanced settings I unchecked the "Allow Application to take exclusive controls on this device" and the "Give the exclusive mode applications priority" options. I then restarted my laptop but the issue still remained.
  • Still within this control panel -> sound -> advanced setting I changed the device format to

16-bit, 44100 Hz

16-bit, 48000 Hz

24-bit, 44100 Hz

24-bit, 48000 Hz

Restarted my laptop each time I changed the format but the issue remained.

So after, doing all this I then uninstalled and downloaded and reinstalled my audio driver. I used the link below. I downloaded the "64bits Vista, Windows7, Windows8, Windows8.1, Windows10 Driver only (Executable file)". The guide I followed said this still works on Windows 11.

After downloading and installing the audio driver the problem got worse. Now, the static/buzz sound is always there. It's always on whenever my laptop is on. And now it's produced from both my left and right speakers. Also now when I plug in my headphones into the headphone jack or if I use Bluetooth headphones, my headphones still are able to produce good sound quality but my laptop speakers still output the static/buzz sound. I really don't know what to do. I should stress that when I play audio from my laptop speakers, my laptop speakers are able to produce good sound quality but it always produces this static/buzz noise. This static/buzz noise is still in the background. Even if I mute the speakers, the static/buzz noise is still there. It's really weird.

I repeated the steps I mentioned previously again but none of it fixed it.

Any other help or ideas would be really appreciated.

    Hi Rob Ge,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. I understand that you're experiencing issues with your Surface Laptop 4's built-in speakers.

Based on the information you've provided; it seems like you've already tried a number of troubleshooting steps to fix the issue. Considering that the issue only occurs on the left speaker and also does not occur when using external audio devices like headphones, this is likely a hardware issue already but before we conclude, let us try some other steps first:

    1. Check for Windows updates: Make sure that your Surface Laptop 4 is up to date with the latest Windows updates. To do this, go to Settings > Windows Update and click on "Check for updates". If there are any updates available, install them and see if the issue is resolved. Make sure all updates are installed including Optional updates.
    2. Disable audio enhancements: Sometimes, audio enhancements can cause issues with the sound quality. To disable audio enhancements, go to Control Panel > Sound > Playback tab > Speakers > Properties > Enhancements tab and check the box next to "Disable all enhancements". Click OK and see if the issue is resolved.
    3. Reset the audio service: Sometimes, resetting the audio service can help resolve audio issues. To do this, press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box, type "services.msc" and press Enter. In the Services window, scroll down to "Windows Audio" and right-click on it. Select "Restart" and see if the issue is resolved.
    4. Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit: The Surface Diagnostic Toolkit can help diagnose and fix issues with your Surface device. See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface app and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Support

If none of these steps work, it's possible that there may be a hardware issue with your Surface Laptop 4's speakers. In this case, I would recommend contacting our live support for further assistance. You can reach them through these steps:

    1. Go to Contact Us - Microsoft Support
    2. Choose how you would like to get support for your Surface device.
    3. Type in the problem you need help with.
    4. Look at any available solutions offered and select Contact Support.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

    Kind regards,
    Marrion

    Hi Marrion,

    Thanks for the reply.

I've tried the other troubleshooting options you've mentioned and unfortunately, the problem still persists. I think you may be right, it may be a hardware issue and so I'll contact Microsoft Support.

    Thanks for your help.

    Kind regards,

    Rob
